There were a lot of people who didn't want to wear seatbelts either when they first became available even though they were proven to save lives. Wearing a seatbelt only protects you. People complained about their freedom. Govt finally said F your freedom and made them mandatory.

Of course even now there are people dying because they didn't wear their seatbelt.

Neither is really the issue. They key issue is the collective good which can take priority over individual liberties.

It is really pathetic all the pansies complaining about mandatory vaccines. There used to be a draft in this country. Once a guy turned 18 his name went into the hat and if his number came up he went into the military. His rights didn't mean jack sh**.

A lot of those guys never came home, hundreds of thousands were killed. I wonder what they would think about these babies complaining about mandatory vaccines.

One could easily argue civil liberties are in the interest of the public good. That's the whole reason America came to exist, right? No central authority dictating our lifestyle and medical decisions with an iron fist, the way a place like Iran would. Dictatorship and oppression are human history and human tendency. Civil liberties are rare, and fragile. One can argue it's MORE important for the old/vulnerable to simply take extra precaution, than give such sweeping authority to partisan interests. Old people die sometimes. It sucks, and we dont like it to happen. But do we sacrifice the basic principles that uphold western democracy to keep an extra 3% of the elderly population alive?

In any case, "public good" isnt really for you to decide on a whim or based on partisan loyalties. The question is should the government decide or should individuals decide? You seem to switch your position based on who's taking the side you prefer. That's not consistent.

Also, as far as seatbelts... it's not the law that keeps most people wearing them. It's the obvious impact on surviving an accident. Speeding is also illegal, but people do that all the time. In the end it isn't the laws saving lives, it's common sense. People should also be able to exercise that when it comes to Covid. But you believe it's the place of special interests to decide for them it seems.

I never said it was for me to decide. In the case of a national emergency the government can decide to put the collective good ahead of civil liberties.

The govt could reinstitute the draft whenever they want. All it takes is an act of Congress and those young guys whining about vaccines would forget about the vaccine in a hurry.
