Butler had received more playing time during the preseason than fellow young guard Leandro Bolmaro. Meanwhile, Udoka Azubuike hasn't yet consistently shown he's ready for NBA minutes — with the caveat that he's had two season-ending injuries since being drafted in the first round by Utah in 2021.

Udoka looked like a rotation player last year for that 18 or whatever game stretch he had. Bolmaro has more size. He was a 1st round pick

Butler, though, would have had a hard time cracking even this rebuilding rotation with so many guards ahead of him, and with new head coach Will Hardy’s penchant for long, big lineups, a smaller guard like Butler would have had a tough road to hoe.
