This guy took 7 threes a game 57 years ago.
there were games he would take 13 or 15. There’s a 46 point game where he went 9-11 and shot 17 of 25 in total. But early in his career, his team got a couple Hall of Fame bigs in Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore and he had to calm all that shit down.
The footage there is from when he’d mostly stopped. He shot 39% from 3 that season but only made 46 down from back to back years around 200.
The three-point revolution might’ve come earlier if a bigger star had started it. Rick Barry should have been the guy but he was a midrange specialist through and through. Pistol Pete was too but given the chance he might have shown his ass in the ABA.

My dad legit quit watching the NBA when they introduced the 3pt line. Can’t even imagine what he’d think of today.

There was a 3 point line in the ABL back in 61 and 62. Those stats are scarce tho. The Eastern League as well. Dick Barnett maybe had some games in the ABL.

Nice find, I've never heard of the guy but apparently he was ahead of his time. Wonder where they got the footage from. Kind looks vhs-ish but I'm not sure it was invented yet at the time of the video.

I dunno which game it was, but I used to spam 3s with some guy named Paul Arizon in one of the 2k games from back in the day. Sure the guy is prob a legend since he was on the all old timers team, but I dunno anything about him.

According to basketball reference they called him Pitchin Paul Arizin. Weird nickname for a basketball player.

They called him that because he’s the guy who started taking jumpers. Though so say it was “Jumpin” Joe Fulks. They both supposedly started jumping to shoot instead of taking set shots. Fulks came first but I’m not sure who started shooting jumpers first.
Paul lasted a while. He was still playing with Wilt on the warriors though he was near retirement.

They used to call jump shooting pitching?

They didn’t call jump shooting anything because people took set shots. I guess it took a while to work out the lingo when everyone began jumping. But taking jump shots is why he was named pitching Paul

He actually played close to the end of the 60s semi pro in the Eastern League . Won an MVP there. Eastern League was probably close in play to the NBA until the late 50s.
