A lot of people know Vince Carter for his dunking but on the Nets he was known as VC3 by the announcers because of his long range capability. They had it programmed into the speakers.

Prime Vince is easily one of the most underrated players in past decades. His freak athleticism took a sharp decline after suffering knee injuries in 2001-2002. People used to say "Half Man, Half A Season" in reference on how injury prone Vince was. I honestly think Vince would've become an all-time great had he stayed healthy.

A shame Vince got blackballed from All-NBA selections by media during his Nets years. There’s no way he only had 2 All NBA seasons. Should have had a couple more based on 05-06 & 06-07.

Media absolutely held what happened in Toronto against him.

I would say Vince's best all-around season was 2005-06, his first full campaign with Nets.

Vince not only kept his scoring numbers averaging 24.2 points in 79 games. He kept working on his game (moving jumpers, post-scoring, catch-and-shoot, and relentless finishes around the rim). He definitely kept his hard work on the rebounding game (almost 500 rebounds on that season for a SG, next to J-Kidd). And he showed us why he was one of the clutchest players (that game winner vs TORONTO).

But allow me to highlight something about Vince's true underrated talents:

    (1) His ball-handling/Passing ability: In this particularly season, Vince averaged 4.3 assists. However, distributing and facilitating was not his primarily role (J-Kidd was that man). This man is truly an underrated passer as a two guard, suffering this kind of criticism due to stats (such as Ginobili, for example). As far as his dribbling, superb and truly effective ball handler, that utilized cross-overs and hesitation moves, not only for scoring purposes (step-backs and moving shots).

    (2) Offensive Rebounding: This highlights Vince's true tenacity. His Offensive Rebounding average as a Net player is about 1.4, this season he improved up to 1.7, grabbing a Net high of 135 offensive rebounds (considering J-Kidd as triple double machine).

    (3) Underrated Defensive Skills: Everyone knew what Vince could bring to the table, scoring wise, but defensively, this is a phase in which he has been always forgotten by critics. As an overall, Vince averaged 1.2 steals per game, and yes that sounds regular, not a top number for a defensive star. But again, he was not the leader on the defensive end, Kidd was (1.9 steals). Vince had 94 steals this season (4th best season, tied with the '02 season). Shot blocking as well! As a two guard, shot blocking is not a primary objective, despite this, he averaged 0.7 blocks (55 total blocks). Finally, Vince's quickness, acknowledged on his offensive game, is clearly noticeable on the defensive end when he guards one-on-one (lateral quickness), or when he helps on closing out a player near the rim. I mean the guy is really an all around player, a basketball player who not only led the team on scoring, but turned this Nets team up to the fourth best team defensively that year (6th Opposite per game points).

Vince was a very good 3PT shooter even on Raptors with 38% on 4 attempts per game (which was a lot then)

Shit, I actually didn't realize Vince only had 2 All-NBAs. That is crazy. I was thinking well there was Kobe, Wade, AI, Tmac, Nash, Agent Zero etc but you'd think he would have still made a few third teams somewhere in there.

In 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 he didn't play enough games to warrant a selection. Maybe he could have gotten more in his Nets days, but I don't remember him being a household name those seasons. The Nets were a borderline playoff team, and they were kind of in the background. Popularity wise yes, he was up there with Kobe, AI, T-Mac or Wade, but mostly because of what he had done in his early Raptors years.

I wasn't referring specifically to those seasons, that's why I mentioned guys like Wade, Nash( MVP), Arenas because those guys were making all-NBA teams between 2005-2007 and I incorrectly assumed Vince had snuck on at least a few third teams somewhere in there. I mean for example, the Nets were the third seed in 2006. At the guard spots, Kobe and Nash( who won his 2nd MVP) were no-brainer first team. Wade at 2nd team was also a no brainer, so it was basically between Vince and guys like Chauncey, Iverson and Arenas. He was the odd man out even though the Nets had a better record than the Sixers and Wizards that year. But for the years you mention, in 2002 he played 60 games and in 2004 he played 73. Those are enough games to make all-nba, there were just better choices those years.
