They're not the same and they're absorbed differently by the body and bloodstream. Because fructose is absorbed much faster by the liver and without being regulated by insulin, the liver ends up absorbing much more of it. This is a negative process for the liver and you end up with less ATP.

That being said, no sugar is good for you, at least not in the amounts of cola.

Oh, corn or any other form of sugary sirup here is glucose. Makes it a tad worse, but as you say in the end no sugar is good in that amount.

Pretty sure that in a lot of European countries they're now allowed to call high fructose corn sirup for "sugar" on labels, because it's been argued like you did that they're basically the same. Also pretty sure that high fructose corn syrup is made from 55% fructose and 45% glucose, it's derived from corn though and then added various enzymes in a factory.

Anything above 5% fructose has to be labeled as such in the EU.

Alright that seems like a good rule.

In Coca Cola, the recipe is almost identical across European counties, apart for the sugar. Coke sold in Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria has fructose-glucose syrup, while all other countries have white sugar. This explains the slight variation in energy in the nutritional information.
    28. Pepsi

All products use sugar, no glucose-fructose syrup.

Less sugar in Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

So if you're in one of those Eastern European countries and have to drink cola, at least make it a Pepsi.
