It's the first time that the first American drafted has been white since ... Kent Bensen in 1977!
The Stock rate was super hyped by a ton of the analytics guys, but in addition to that, he showed up at the combine and measured out great athletically. Including the top vertical number iirc. And he's an elite shooter.

Very strong steal and block percentages, BPM, and EPM. Waiting for Basketball Reference to update those numbers to account for last night's game against Denver.

Per 36 it’s pretty much 20/4/5/2.4 steal on 63% TS. Those are some good numbers for him. It would be interesting to see how he would handle an increased workload. I haven’t watched any Houston games this year but they have been cooking.
Last season I was reading clutchfans after Warriors beat Houston and saw that over there they call Reed Sheppard “Cocaine Curry”

He's a pretty damn good shooter. 46.2% 3PT on 3.7 catch-and-shoot threes/g (50.0% on 3.5 over last 8 games); 50.0% on 1.6 pull-up threes/g (53.3% on 1.9 over last 8 games). He's got more to offer on offense (and defense) than Luke Kennard, who's a comparable level of three-point shooter.
He'll have to work on that handle if he wants to approach anything close to Trae or Dame, let alone Curry. Those guys were taking 6 to 8+ pull-up threes in their usual prime seasons.

I think the nickname was more tongue in cheek from what I gathered. He doesn’t need to be compared to those guys I don’t think that’s his game.
What’s interesting though is compare his stats to someone like Desmond Bane.

+6.7 BPM on the season. 3.3% STL, 1.5% BLK. +2.7 EPM (+2.2 off, +0.5 def; 90th percentile/37th in the NBA). Despite his smaller role, only Durant (1.6), Sengun (1.5), and Thompson (1.2) have more estimated wins (EW) than Sheppard (1.0).
+10.6 BPM over the last 8 games. 4.0% STL, 1.4% BLK.

Sure, you might get some easy shots against him, but he's going to try and ruin enough possessions to balance it out.

Reminds me a bit of Jason Terry, with a nicer J.

Re: Reed Sheppard cooking at Summer League!
Yeah some people don't want to give Reed credit for his defense. They see what they want to see.

Dude looks a hell of a lot like a young Mark Price. Letting it fly tonight against the warriors and looks like the best offensive player on the court for them already.

Essentially the #1 option on offense tonight without KD. Huge win on the road against a playoff-level team.

Also active as shit defensively. Of course he can be picked on by bigger guys but he competes on that end for sure.

He is shepping up just when we needed him to. He is also making great reeds, his court vision and passing is great.

Re: Reed Sheppard cooking at Summer League!
He has the brilliant move of shoving his defender hard when the ref isn't looking and then racing off to the 3 point line. Unless he's depending on favorable officiating, that may be hard to build your game around. I know the league wants to prop up favorites like Doncic to win back an alienated segment of the audience, but that's asking a lot.
