Default Bass players: Carol Kay

Who's familiar with her? I wasn't untill recently, and I should have known her.

In 1963 when a Fender bassist didn't show up for a record date at Capitol Records, she picked up the Fender bass (as it was called then) and augmented her busy schedule playing bass and grew quickly to be the no. 1 call with record companies, movie & TV film people, commericals (ads), and industrial films.

I never knew her name but her sound is pretty recognizable. She started playing the bass with a plectrum, seeing she originally was a guitar player. For instance the bass you hear here:
Sam Cooke's Wonderful World

and this one:
Hikky-Burr Cosby Show Theme

She's one of those artists you never hear about but who really put a huge mark on the history of music!
Beach Boys' Sloop John B

I was watching the same show yesterday.
Carol Kaye is pretty great, but she gets a little too much attention compared to her peers.

To put it in perspective, you have a ton of great session bass players:
-Willy Weeks
-Joe Osborn
-Marcus Miller
-Willie Dixon
-Bill Lee
-Chuck Rainey
-Abe Laboriel
-Tony Levin
-Jerry Jemmott

And there's more.

There all great and they all seemed to have played on a thousand great records. Kaye is just one of them. You don't see a ton of great female session players though, it's mostly guys. You don't see a ton of great female instrumentalists period.

Well it's just what you consider "too much" most people aren't familiar with sessions artists at all. I really like the stories of the Bar-Kays and Mar-Kays too.

I love this time of the year with the Top2000 shows on the Dutch TV. Leo Blokhuis = .
