Angry Nick Calathes expected to choose Greece over the NBA

Quote:
In a baffling move, Florida star guard Nick Calathes is expected to choose Greece over the NBA.

According to sources close to the situation, Calathes will sign a contract to play for Panathinaikos, one of the top teams in Greece, despite potentially being selected in the first round of the June 25 NBA Draft.

The decision was first reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

"It makes no sense," one source told FOXSports.com. "Nick's dream, like most American kids, is to play in the NBA. His dad (John) is behind the decision."

The 6-foot-5 Calathes, who has dual citizenship, played for the Greek National Team last summer but had far from a stellar experience.

Part of his deal with Panathinaikos will be for Calathes to withdraw from the NBA Draft. Within 10 days of signing the deal, he'll have to go over to Greece and pass a physical.

Calathes will then be eligible for the 2010 NBA Draft, but teams will likely, according to a source, have to pay a significant buyout to Panathinaiko

I really don't understand this. He could of been a first round pick.

These guys are using europe as ways to try to control where they are drafted like high school baseball draftees use junior colleges

Very surprising considering he won't even sniff playing time on such a strong team.

I take that back, I've heard Sarunas Jasikevicius is not likely to return to PAO, so Calathes may see a fair share of minutes.

He's getting paid 1.3 million a year. That's what Anthony Randolph is making and he was a lottery pick. Nick wasn't going to be a lottery pick he was going to be late 1st early 2nd. He's going to be making a lot more
