Public Enemy has to squeeze in there somewhere. KRS is a candidate too.

This is not a ten greatest rappers list, but the most important people in hip-hop. Although I should put Public Enemy here.

    Red means NO, blue agree.

    Here's a better list:

    Kool Herc
    Russell Simmons
    Ice T
    Uncle Luke
    Rick Rubin
    Rakim
    Curtis Blow
    Beastie Boys
    Sugarhill Gang
    RZA

Kool Herc is credit as the inventor of hip hop, without him we aint having this discussion.

Russell made it a legit business.

Ice T original gangster rapper and movie star. And he put the West on the map, paving the way for NWA.

Uncle Luke is more important to music in general than just hip hop. He fought for freedom of speech and censorship. As well as being one of the godfathers of Southern hiphop.

Rick Rubin was the first super producer/a&r extraordinaire. But even more important than the hits he made, is he is even more responsible for Def Jam Records than Russell. They remain good friends.

Rakim revolutionized hip hop by taking it to the next level.... he was a huge seismic impact segueing hip hop into the next generation.

Curtis Blow was the first hip hop superstar (this is debatable)

Hip hop's main audience is 'white' people. Beastie Boy's impact is extremely and grossly underrated, as they introduced it to the world. Without them, hip hop doesn't reach the masses, and their record "Paul's Boutique" is the epicenter (like Rakim was to rapping) for production. Completely revolutionizing the way people sample records forever. Instead of just the usual 'loop' it becomes more scientific and technical.

Sugarhill Gang, they put hip hop on the map by having the first legit hit and taking it out of the clubs.

RZA changed the way contracts are made, completely changing not just hip hop but the entire music industry.

Some are debatable, but others shouldn't be.

I thought with your unconditional love of Gilbert Arenas you'd tried to sneak him in here somewhere...

Rakim, Tupac Shakur, Chuck D, Russell Simmons, Kool Herc, Afrikaa Bambatta, Kool G. Rap, Roxanne Shante, Beastie Boys and Puff Daddy.

This of course is my opinion.
