Default Re: The Illini might be back....Introducing Jereme Richmond

Miles showed flashes/ability to eventually turn into a very good NBA player. It just never panned out for him. He did eventually develop a decent shot from the perimeter.

If Richmond is further along at this point of his career than Evan Turner was then that is scary. Turner is the most complete player in the nation and the only other player I MIGHT pick ahead of him in draft is John Wall.

Well, few guys improve as much over their college careers as Evan Turner has. Turner was a very good high school player, a Top 50 recruit, but I don't think anyone had any idea he'd be the best all-around college basketball player in the country and a possible No. 2 overall pick. So I'm definitely not saying that Richmond is going to be as good as Evan Turner.

But it's within reach if he works for it. He has similar abilities. He may not have quite as good of a handle or the same kind of uncanny court sense, but he's a better shooter and he's a little bit bigger and definitely more athletic.

I watched him play again yesterday, in the City/Suburban Shootout against Whitney Young. Waukegan was missing perhaps their second-best player, point guard Mike Springs (in fairness, Young was missing Sam Thompson, too). I don't remember what his stat line was, I think he had 16-18 points and 11 board and a ton of blocks, but he just destroyed Whitney Young. Statistically it wasn't a mind-boggling game from him but the overall skill set was on display big-time. Defensively, he was a one-man wrecking crew. Offensively, he hit several long-range pullup jumpers, had two highlight-reel dunks, and oh my god, the passing. It's my favorite part of his game.

Waukegan won 59-42. Not much happened in the first half, I think it was 19-16 or something like that at the half, and Waukegan just ripped them apart in the second half. They got it ramped up to their preferred breakneck pace and Young isn't comfortable playing at that speed. Richmond completely shut down the paint, swatting almost everything and what he didn't swat, he altered. The only downside for Richmond was the stupid long-sleeved shirt he wore underneath his jersey. It looks so dumb.

Hopefully Young gets it together or the anticipated title-game rematch won't happen. Personally, I wish it was still just two classes because I'd prefer a rematch between the two teams I truly believe are the best in the state regardless of how many highly-ranked players they may or may not have: Waukegan and Champaign Centennial. Centennial put a hurt on Waukegan at Assembly Hall two months ago but Waukegan is a much-improved team at this point.

(Yes, I'm biased as a Centennial grad. But the 3A state title and 57-2 record over the last two years speaks for itself.)

Illinois HS basketball has to be some of the best in the country--very underrated.

I have to agree with you about those long sleeve undergarments...those shooting sleeve things opened the flood gates.

one more thing, i'm not sure what waukegan's policy on tattoos is, but a girl i dated for a few weeks is pretty much family with jereme, and told me i coulda gone with her and him to get his tattoos sometime in february, which might be why he's wearing that long-sleeve shirt.

I sometimes wear long sleeves when playing basketball. Don't see the problem with it. It's cold in the gym sometimes.

I tend to think the long sleeve under armour shirts or whatever the players are wearing now look kind of dumb. But I also wear long sleeves sometime when I play pickup ball, mostly when I'm in a drafty gym that takes forever to warm up. I have a hard time believing that the gyms the guys in college in the NBA are playing in are cold, but I can see a lot of high schools having a chilly gym. And like someone else pointed out, he may be wearing it to cover up tatoos but in the highlight videos someone posted on here he wasn't wearing a long sleeve shirt. I like the long sleeves look better to cover up tatoos than whatever it was LeBron wore in high school to cover up his.

No, but had I known that was the day it was going on I might've made the trip up from Champaign to check it out. I watched it on TV. I actually had the time to do it this past weekend if I'd wanted to. Oh well. If Waukegan and Centennial are both playing for the state title I'll probably make my way to Peoria. (And if Robinson is too, in the 2A title, all the better, to see Meyers Leonard. I have absolutely no clue where they stack up in the 2A race, if anywhere near it at all.)
