Re: For those who don't believe in God: what are your opinions on exorcism?
Anneliese Michaels started out at 16 suffering from convulsions and epileptic attacks. Her behavior gradually deteriorated to the point where she tore off her clothes, ate spiders off the floor and drank her own urine. She refused to walk by a Jesus statue or drink water from a holy spring.
the wiki page is pretty terse. apparently she sought medical help, but it didn't do her any good, which lead to the involvement of catholic exorcists for 10 months. that didn't help either and she eventually died in her sleep of malnutrition and dehydration.

It also says that both the parents and the priests were prosecuted for negligence because she was diagnosed with psychosis. So.... I'm guessing she had psychosis.
I'm not denying the existence of God. I'm just saying that possessions are usually easily explained. I even believe in hauntings because I've lived in a house that did things only explained by something that I can't understand completely, but I've never seen anything like a real possesion.

Exorcisms are 100% FAKE. It's a bunch of drama queens. One guy acts as an "exorcist" and the "exorcised" plays along and goes crazy bobling and throwing themselves around on a bed. What's the big stupid deal?

meh, psychosis is just a word for a thinking abnormality. in some cases there are clinical explanations for it; in others there aren't.
don't you find it just a tad bit peculiar that she couldn't walk past a Jesus statue? that she refused to drink holy water?
or even this...
Quote:
he priests produced recordings of various exorcisms they had performed, during which they said they could distinguish the voices of two demons in the process of arguing, wondering which of them would leave the body of Anneliese first.

well those behavioral characteristics suggest that she is plagued by demons. so if you are just going to blanket them with the mental disorder, then you are falling prey to what I mentioned earlier.
I understand bizarre behavior with mental illness but being unable to walk past a statue of Jesus out of all the statues on the planet is an oddity. Same for denying holy water. Then of course different voices coming out of her mouth during her exorcism, arguing over which would leave the body first.
