If "Im too sexy" by right said fred and the macarena can have their go around with popularity, then I dont see how Gangnam wouldnt have been a "hit" as well. Its a one hit wonder....they've always been around.

I think it's really cool.

you couldnt make a music video like gangam style, without heavy financial backing, the kind you only get from 'executives' and 'corporations'

im not sure gangam style's success is as organic a you portray it to be

This. People seem to forget the Soulja Boy dance from not too long ago and shit like the Macarena existed. If you want to make a hit just make sure there's a catch tune and an accompanying dance.

I don't think it would be as popular, mainly because mainstream pop wasn't so electronic/techno oriented as it is today.

We're in the "electropop sound" for the past 5 years, if you think about it. This goes for mainstream artists and indies.

Examples:
LMFAO, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Rihanna's recent singles, Usher's recent works, MGMT, Animal Collective, La Roux, Passion Pit, Phantogram, and many more.
