Brooklyn Nets regular season set to begin
Can the Nets compete for a title? Probably not.
Can they be better than the Knicks? Yes.
And in Year 1 in New York, being better than the Knicks would be represent a successful debut Ė even if Mikhail Prokhorov publicly sets the bar higher.
The Nets are dealing with New York attention, equipped with a $1 billion arena and a payroll that stampeded through the luxury tax threshold. They have flaws, specifically interior defense. Theyíre also a roster full of castaways (Utah shipped Williams because they didnít want to deal with his free agency; Atlanta didnít want Joe Johnsonís contract; No team wanted Kris Humphries; Brook Lopez was dangled as trade bait and Orlando scoffed).
But for the first time since Jason Kiddís migraine in 2007, the Nets are a team with lofty goals and aspirations. Anything less than a playoff berth would be a huge disappointment for a starting lineup with three All-Stars and a budding one at center.
