Default Rep Duncan Hunter (R-CA) Used Campaign Cash in Affairs with Five Women

Quote:
Justice Department prosecutors alleged on Monday that Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) used campaign contributions to have multiple extramarital affairs, including a $1,000 ski vacation with a female lobbyist.

According to the court filing, Hunter started using the campaign funds to “carry out a series of intimate relationships” with five women soon after he first entered office in 2009.

The first woman (“Individual 14”) was a lobbyist. For about three years, Hunter dipped into his campaign contributions to pay for a couple’s ski getaway (which cost more than $1,000), a road trip to Virginia Beach, and hotel stays, according to prosecutors.

After their relationship ended in 2012, the GOP lawmaker allegedly carried out affairs with four other women until at least 2016–at his donors’ expense.

Wow... no wonder he tried to throw his wife under the bus on Fox News so quickly after they were indicted.

I never used these emojis, but both the and are apropos... and the obligatory

At this point, you can probably count the politicians without much dirt on them with the fingers of your two hands (and that is being optimistic).

Apparently his wife (likely soon to be ex-wife) is going to do her best to help prosecutors put him in prison.

Quote:
On Thursday, U.S. attorneys in San Diego announced that Margaret Hunter had pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiring with her husband to steal about $250,000 in campaign funds over a period of six years. She, along with her husband, had originally been charged with 60 counts of breaking federal law.

With this deal, Margaret, 44, faces a maximum of five years in prison. Prosecutors say they will recommend the lower range of sentencing, though it’s impossible to know what the judge will do. Jeremy Warren, a veteran San Diego criminal defense attorney, predicted she may serve no jail time at all “as long as she continues to cooperate against her husband.”

She agreed to turn over all documents in the case, to testify at any legal proceeding deemed necessary by the government, to submit to a polygraph exam to test her truthfulness, and to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if she breaches the agreement.

Is anyone surprised?

It's like the college bribes scandal that broke earlier this year. I'm amazed people were actually stunned that it has been going on forever.

Duncan Hunter's been doing this stuff for over a decade and just now it's being reported?

Honestly, I feel sorry for people who react with "oh wow.. how could they do such a thing as a great public servant and role model?"

Politicians are liars and crooks. Best thing we can do is limit their power. The bigger the gov't, the tougher it is to find the corruption. Federal gov't should always be the last resort to handle any problem.

shit, it already always is. nothing ever gets solved until the problem is at it's absolute worst, and even then it's a half assed bandaid solution.

He recently talked about his military unit probably killing hundreds of civilians in Iraq. Not necessarily the kind of guy you want watching your 6, or representing you in Congress.

Quote:
Rep. Duncan D. Hunter said his military unit “killed probably hundreds of civilians” in Iraq, the California Republican’s latest eyebrow-raising comments since being charged last year with spending campaign funds on personal expenses.

Hunter, a Marine Corps veteran, made the remark while renewing his call for clemency for Edward Gallagher, a Navy SEAL chief who is accused of killing an Islamic State prisoner under his care in 2017.

“I frankly don’t care if he was killed. I just don’t care,” Hunter said of the slain prisoner in an interview on “Zero Blog Thirty,” a military-themed podcast produced by Barstool Sports. He added, “Even if everything that the prosecutors say is true in this case, then, you know, Eddie Gallagher should still be given a break, I think.”

One of the podcast’s hosts, Kate Mannion, pushed back, arguing that “it’s such a slippery slope” and that Gallagher’s alleged killing of the prisoner “goes against our honor so egregiously.”

“Well, then, how do you judge me?” Hunter replied. “So, I was an artillery officer, and we fired hundreds of rounds into Fallujah, killed probably hundreds of civilians — if not scores, if not hundreds of civilians. Probably killed women and children, if there were any left in the city when we invaded. So do I get judged, too?”

Yeah, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that if you’re in the military and you’ve ever fired missiles or dropped bombs into cities, towns or villages, chances are you’ve killed some civilians.

Yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it's not a good look to invoke that fact in defense of someone who stabbed an enemy combatant unnecessarily and then took pictures with the teen's dead body. Nor is it a good look to say that you too have taken pictures with dead combatants while throwing other service members under that same bus.

Quote:
Hunter said he also posed for a photo next to a dead combatant but said he did not text it or post it to social media. The congressman said "a lot of us have done the exact same thing," referring to fellow service members in Iraq and Afghanistan.
