Default Mangini to coach the Browns

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to hire Eric Mangini as their head coach, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.

Mangini, fired last week by the New York Jets, reached an agreement with the club Wednesday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because Mangini's contract has not been finalized.

Mangini is being represented by agent Ron Shapiro, who is Mangini's father-in-law.

The 37-year-old Mangini began his NFL career as a ballboy with the Browns in 1994.

He went 23-25 and made the playoffs once in three seasons with the Jets, who stumbled down the stretch to lose four of their last five and miss the playoffs after an 8-3 start.

The Browns fired Romeo Crennel after the team went 4-12 this season

God damn this is retarded. We don't have a GM, but we're hiring a head coach? One of the first and only guys we've reportedly interviewed?

Way to go Lerner. Gonna be another long 5 years before we end up firing this loser.

Yup, they got it ass backwards. What to do when they hire the GM? "Hey welcome aboard! By the way, we already picked the coach out for ya, so whatever it is you were looking for in a head coach...........um, hope this guy fits the bill!"

It could potentially create a weird, if not bad, culture on the team. You build from the top down. I can't think of another industry where the workers are hired before the main boss is. One of the boss' job IS the hiring..........

ESPN reporting this for true.

They're saying Mangini started his career as a ball boy for the Browns and coached here under Bellichek.

Mangini is supposed to bring in the Raiders DC, and the QB's coach from the Jets is going to be OC?

WTF is going to happen to Chud?

And does this mean we're not hiring a GM, if Mangini's just going to pick his guys?

This makes me feel even better about the signing :

Belichek's former assistants records:

Romeo Crennel 24-40
Eric Mangini 23-25
Nick Saban 15-17
Al Groh 9-7

Well Al Groh has a winning record so there's hope, and Mangini's record is almost a winning one!

It doesn't appear as though they have learned any lessons from four years ago. They brought in Crennel before Savage. I would think that you would want your GM to either pick the next head coach or at least be a part of the discussion.

I'm not upset with this decision, though. I do think Mangini can succeed. He had a winning record in two of his three seasons in New York and that team wasn't exactly steeped in talent.

They would have probably won 12 games this year had it not been for Favre.

One thing is for sure... Mangini will bring some fire back to the Cleveland sidelines. Romeo was asleep at the switch.

I remember in the Jets' last loss of the season, after one of Favre's more dreadful interceptions, they cut to a shot of Mangini on the sidelines. He was cussing Favre up and down.

Here is a sample of Romeo....

*Brady Quinn throws a terrible interception*

*Browns go 0-16*

*Browns win the Super Bowl*

*Goodyear Blimp crashes on the 50-yard line*

He's already hurting us. ESPN reported that the Polini deal is absolutely done, that he won't work with Mangini. So we're out a GM of superbowl quality.

I don't buy that in the least. Who were the Jets going to get better than Favre? He still up a 80 something QB rating and threw 22 TD's and 3000 yards. Guys like that aren't just lying around on waivers. Favre just gets all the hate for his INT's, which I think is just damn stupid, because he's always thrown a lot of INT's. You pretty much have to expect that. Not to mention that Farve's still there. Mangini's the one that got fired.

All of that is true, but I can pick any bum off the street to show emotion. We need a head coach.

Eagles General Manager Tom Heckert has taken himself out of the running for the Browns GM vacancy and the team might interview former Broncos GM Ted Sundquist, a league source told The Plain Dealer Thursday.

Heckert, who was scheduled to interview on Friday, pulled his name because he wanted to have a say in hiring the head coach. The Browns are planning to touch bases with Heckert again on Friday, but he won't change his mind, the source said.

Heckert agreed to interview with the Browns before they hired Eric Mangini on Wednesday night. If Heckert had been interviewed, he probably would've pushed for Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who interviewed with the Browns last Thursday.

Not unless we can't find someone else since we're apparently ready to hire a whole staff and THEN a GM.
