    Default Trumpet Players

Does anyone on ISH play the instrument. I recently was given a trumpet, and have decided to learn to play it. I am having difficulty deciding who my inspiration should be, and have decided to turn to ISH for advice.

Advice on technique and learning tools would be welcome as well.

Too many people use players like Miles, Louis, and Dizzy. I would like a player off the beaten path to be my base.

Well my favorite is Freddie Hubbard, but I don't know if that's enough "off the beaten path" for you.

I'd love to learn trumpet myself, it's my favorite instrument in jazz music.

Freddie is awesome. Besides him an Miles I'd probably try to emulate Clifford Brown if I were learning how to play.

Clifford was added to my shortlist. I am also considering Donald Byrd and Nat Adderly. Christian Scott was given consideration, but he is too young, and I left off Cootie Williams because he plays too much in the upper registers. The guy who is teaching me, and gave me the trumpet would flip his lid if I went with Freddie. He really hates Freddie Hubbard.

My favorite trumpet player is Don Cherry, he was in Ornette Colemans band for a long time, but he is an advant garde trumpet player so i don't know if he would be an ideal "traditional inspiration" or w/e. For that i'd recommend Freddie Hubbard or Lee Morgan.

Very easy instrument to play , and very hard to master.

It's less complicated than other brass instruments, yes I played at one time.

It takes months to master wind as well as tone , and range.
Range for most novices will struggle with it , until you become efficient in tone.
    ----------------------
Keep it simple , but if your into Jazz : herb Albert had some song books that were easy reads and easy to play.
More complicated would be Hancock , or Al Hert.
Miles Davis sounded simple , but his licks were off the scale , and unless you are accompanied with other musicians , he is hard to master.

I played Classical , but if you want to expand into less contempory , consider blue grass (Red Clay Ramblers) dixie style , or cajun.

Adamz is a pro , so you might want to send him a private msg , and I am sure he would help.

What type of trumpet brand did you acquire ?

used to play the trombone and can play a basic scale on the trumpet. Developing a strong embouchure is key. I would suggest you start off with a skilled but straightforward player like Doc Severinsen. Miles is great and all, but probably not a good role model for a beginner to formulate his technique on.

SMFH at people having to google kind of blue to know who miles davis is. SMFH

roy hargrove and arturo sandoval would also be two guys who sound brilliant but are accessible.

also, check out dave douglas for an awesome younger player. his album stargazer is beautiful.
