Thumbs up California to split in 3!?

Quote:
Should the country's most populous state be split into three separate states? California voters might be able to make that decision this fall.
A local venture capitalist's proposal to break up California, "CAL 3," gained nearly double the necessary signatures to get it on the ballot in November, which will allow state voters to decide on the partition.
Tim Draper announced Thursday that his initiative had gotten more than 600,000 signatures from registered voters across all of the state's 58 counties, surpassing the 365,880 signatures required by state law.
"This is an unprecedented show of support on behalf of every corner of California to create three state governments that emphasize representation, responsiveness, reliability and regional identity," Draper said.

How could this help California?.
According to the proposal, first announced in November, this will solve California's most pressing issues, including the state's failing school systems, high taxes, deteriorating infrastructure and strained government.
Draper explained that partitioning California into three states would empower regional communities to make better and more sensible decisions for their citizens.
"To create three states from a standing start, you'll get all the benefits of knowing all the things that worked in the past, and all the things that could work in the future and you get to eliminate all the baggage you got in the state," Draper said in a news conference Thursday night at Draper University.
"When you get together and you start something fresh, you have a new way to look at it and create better things" he added.

The 3 smaller states
Draper also suggests that California citizens would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historic boundaries of the various counties, cities and towns.
California: This will be considered the new state which includes Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.
Southern California: San Diego, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, Mono, Madera, Inyo, Tulare, Fresno, Kings, Kern and Imperial counties.
Northern California: This would include the Bay Area and the 31 remaining counties north of Sacramento.

Draper says CAL 3 will deliver the 600,000 signatures to the secretary of state next week and the signatures will then have to be vetted and approved.
CNN reached out to Secretary of State Alex Padilla, but he refused to comment until he receives the signatures.
If the measure is approved by voters, the governor will transfer the notice of state approval to Congress, which will vote to ratify the creation of the new three-state structure.

Constitutional lawyer and professor Jonathan Turley told CNN that congressional approval is not impossible, but not likely to happen, as Democrats could feel they have too much to lose. "Dems consider California to be a single golden empire, it would be hard for them to accept it as three golden empires."
Turley explained that with the creation of two new states, this would likely add four new members to the US Senate, something that could create endless tensions between representatives.
Draper backed a proposal to turn California into six states in 2014 but it failed to get the required number of signatures to qualify, and the measure was not presented to voters in the 2016 polls.

This would be better for all the people living there, but the proposed inland state of Southern California would likely become a red state, so Democrat politicians aren't going to allow the state to be improved for the citizens because they'll lose some power.

tpols be like "teh democrats are a solid C, but teh repubilcans are an F!"

Why not?

It seems to poll favorably among California residents.

Why is it not going to happen?

Wouldn't this make it a lot more difficult for Democrats to win the Presidency? Or no difference

How would the electoral votes be divided? The same amount that California used to have in total wouldn't work. They would need to divide them by population so the Southern part of California would probably be a hell hole blue state.

Maybe it would make it more likely for Dems to win office, who knows?

edit: I saw the populations would be

NorCal: 13.2 million
SoCal: 13.9 million
other one: 12.3 million

I don't see this happening. Dems wouldn't go for it when push comes to shove

Yes, let it happen. If there are certain parts of the state that have clear cultural identities and the state gov. doesn't represent them, let them separate. This is much more preferred than less representation at the state level and allows for more control of individual's choices.

LA and San Fran are absolute shit holes. Not relevant but wanted to throw that in there.

Sure, let's also switch to a popular vote in the general election.

Southern California is too dependant on them to let them go. But if that ever happened then the entire state would fragment. There's no way Central Cali, the Inland Empire and maybe even Orange/San Diego counties are going to let themselves be dragged down by LA.

Wont happen. Too many people would have to be on the same page.

It does make me wonder who would have control of the aqueduct though.

Also...I feel like Texas was gonna try this back in the day because their original admission included the right to divide in the future without all the hurdles normal states would require.

Whats the last state to be created this way? Gotta be either Tennessee or West Virginia. A lot of the southern states were bigger before breaking up....

I think Vermont was new york at one point too.

It looks like a border splits right through LA. I don't like it.

I'd rather do a two-state split that lets the LA/SB area join SD and Palm Desert. NorCal can have all the farmland and desert and Bakersfield and Lake Tahoe.
