I'm betting Shaq would bang the ESPN reporter...if he already didn't.

Insecurity is a factor, but Shaq's more sensitive than anything. He always talks about what this person or that person said, and he reacts to those sorts of things. That has been his problem personality wise throughout his career. His sensitivity more than anything has prevented him from being an even better legend.

but duncan is from the same era as shaq, so the comparisons for these two are going to be stronger. both primes sorta met and played around the same time. so in his mind, shaq knows he needs to at least dominate the total ring count in his own era first to further validate his superiority and leave no room for questions. so he probably feels that since he's the legendary self-labeled mde, he certainly can't let another big man who played in the same era as he have more rings than him.

historically, this sorta notion might not always be the definite case. i mean, we know russell was great, but many rate wilt higher than him anyway. and magic got more rings than bird, but quite a number of people view them about the same anyway despite magic having more jewelry. but i don't fault shaq for having this overall attitude. he's a legend, so of course, his standards are higher for himself. he knows what's going to be looked at when it's all said and done. rings matter.

Yea Shaq is really insecure if he feels he has to have more rings then Duncan to be considered "greater". Not many people are going to think Duncan>Shaq regardless of the ring count, and if they do they're a little crazy.

no disrespect to Bird and McHale, they were great but they don't compare to Kobe & Shaq. I'd say Mike & Pippen probably were better but after that I think it could be a toss up between Magic & Kareem; Kobe & Shaq and even though they didn't win a championship i think Stockon & Malone would have to be somewhere in the discussion as one of the best.
