His basic income plan which addresses technology taking over American jobs is interesting but it's going to put to hordes of 3rd worlders heading right for our borders. Look at the masses coming into Europe to reap these type of benefits. Europe has significant natural obstacles in the way of the hordes making it to their nation plus there's no country in Europe that allows anchor babies to gain citizenship like we do. He will either have to change our 14th amendment and increase border security to a level that makes Trump's plans seem mild by comparison. Or the US will basically become an extension of Central America until it collapses, with both black and white Hitler types rising to power in the chaos. The US doesn't need bodies for labor anymore with technology taking over, so creating a population explosion that all have their hands out is going to create a huge disaster.

    Common sense

    Bingo.

    Socialism is the future.

But you need to secure borders to sustain it.

I've gotta say, you make a very very good point. I liked the sound of his idea, but yea we'd have even MORE people running into this country. I dont mind the immigrants at all, but those benefits probably would make it a problem.

    Quality post.

I've heard this argument so many times, but this is the most extremist version of it. People are coming to this country in droves without the UBI, so most people that desperate would come here anyway. Additionally, he's pro-long-term immigration process, so even if there was a significant increase, they'd have to go years if not decades before they become naturalized. During that time, they'd have to had gotten a job and found ways to support themselves before they were given the monthly income stipend.

I'm not sure if I'm for UBI or not, but the Mad Max-like picture you're painting is ridiculous.

UBI isn't needed if artificial intelligence eliminates jobs in a slow and gradual process... the population will self regulate and reduce via suicide, homicide, lack of money for perscription drugs, lack of money for hospitals, etc.

However, if AI starts to exponentially take over jobs, and I think this is the path we're on, I don't see how UBI won't be a required thing for a functioning society.

Imagine that nearly all retail workers and waitstaff are eliminated within a 5 year period or so. Imagine that nearly all drivers are eliminated within a 5 year period. Now imagine that they're unemployable because they're so low skilled and robots/AI are significantly cheaper to roll out and infinitely better at their jobs.

Shit will get really bad. Like rioting on the streets people killing each other for cheetohs bad.

If this ends up taking 150 years (lol... it won't) then there's no problem... but if it happens over 10 or even 30 years, we've got a big ****ing problem on our hands.

Is his solution the best? Probably not... but I haven't heard of one that's better.

You can also set it so not only you have to be an US Citizen but also over 18 to be eligible for UBI. Pretty much kills long duck's argument. So yeah, even with an anchor baby, it would still take the baby 18yrs to be eligible for it and parents would probably never be eligible if they got in illegally & have no proof of entry

He pretty much says you have to be a US citizen and 18. If there's other social programs involved, UBI would take precedent over them.
