Default Brees didn't make the fourth and 1, did they mention it?

Brees did not make the fourth and 1 where he dived. The reason? Forward progress is stopped WHEN YOU GET HIT. if you pull back by yourself, you don't get it. If you cross the first down marker, then run backwards, you don't get forward progress.

Watch the play, he sticks his arms out on the leap (amazing play), then pulls his arms back. It's not a first down. There is no forward progress.

I noticed the exact same thing. But the commentators didn't mention it once. They praised him for how great of a play it was. Idiots.

lol watching the game I didn't realize that at all. There is probably some bullsh*t intricacy in the rule book that would make it right though.

The officiating in that game was really bad.

I don't get into "that was/wasn't pass interference" or "there was no holding". That crap is for whiners. The game happens in real time for the officials, and those are judgment calls.

But the 4th and 1 you mention is knowledge of the rules.

Same with the horribly botched Brees fumble. They screwed that up every way possible. Even the way it ended up...with Detroit getting the turnover...was completely incorrect given what happened on the field.

I don't know how you can address the "inadvertent whistle" problem, but for replay to not include audio so they can at least get possession correct is ridiculous.

The worst call this weekend was in the Pitt/Den game. When Roethlisberger threw the pass out to the side, but it was really a backwards lateral. That would've been a HUGE deal had Denver lost. It should've been Denver's ball b/c it was an obvious backwards pass and it was clear that Denver recovered it. It should've been Denver ball at the 18-yard line, but instead, Pitt marched downfield for a score.

Again, don't know how you avoid the dreaded "inadvertent whistle". Once the whistle blows, players stop, whether it should have been blown or not.

True. But it was OBVIOUSLY a backwards pass. Even the NBC crew was up in arms about it, talking about it 5 minutes after the next play was over.

the rules committee will have to look at it b/c it could've been a huge screw-up.

Definitely agree with this and OP. Also, not sure if it matters or not, but as Brees was moving backwards on the pile he lost control of the football and regained control later on.
