Just like it not being OK to be horrible to somebody because of their race, it is not OK to be horrible to somebody because of their size.

Is it acceptable for their to be a negative stigma/look down upon/discriminate either directly or indirectly against drug addicts, alcoholics, pedophiles etc?

We can argue semantics about the extent to which each of those impact other individuals and society as a whole, but being obese/a fatty is similar to those mentioned above.

Don't try to twist my words and say being a fatty is the same as being a pedophile. It's not - there are degrees of grey in this discussion.

However, from a purely objective point of view people that are obese cost me as much financially as a pedophile does to society moralistically.

We don't want our society to show any sort of approval for that, regardless of whether it is innate and genetic or a learned behavior.

Similarly, we should not let obese people feel that it is okay to be the way they are. It lowers our overall standard as a society. We wouldn't all of a sudden say that kids should choose whether to go to school or not.

Obesity is similar to an addiction. In an odd way, working out and dieting have a negative impact on fatties because of the lack of education regarding it. It should be treated severely and with proper support.

If you are fat there is still some muscle. However, say you lose weight through unhealthy methods (crash dieting), then you lose your muscle %. Inevitably, when you go back up to your original weight you are now MORE fat than you were before because you can't get back that muscle you lot. It is a viscous and endless cycle that results in Hutt level blobs.

The sad thing is that this is so easy to combat, yet it is a Catch 22. As always, the people that most need the help (be it fat, sick, poor, uneducated) are unable to get the support of society to get better. They are just expected to do it themselves (the American way).

It is why other more "socialistic" countries succeed where America fails. They support those that fall from the norms much better than we do.

So now people who over eat are comparable to crack addicts? This is a terrible comparison. Junkies are also looked down upon because of violence and crimes that are associated with it. People aren't gunned down over burgers and people aren't waiting down the block from schools trying to get children hooked on Twinkies so they can sell them more in the future.

Wow, look at my post above and see a quick example of how stupid this comparison is.

You only look at it in the small, microcosm picture though. I understand it is hard to objective.

The # of crack addicts is very low. Additionally, the crimes committed by them are also very low. You make a random violence association which actually isn't very true. Correlation does not equate to causation in this instance.

To move on, the # of fat obese people is extremely high.

Being fat (and the stuff that come with being fat) kills off more people in our society than anything else. The notion that it is "okay" is completely damaging to our society.

Being obese is a disease. I'm not at all saying everyone needs to look in shape at all. Body types come in many forms. However, every person in our society should be striving to be in their natural healthy form. Saying that a 5'7 guy that is 215 is doing fine is the same as saying it is okay that they do crack once in a while. In my opinion, being obese is that damaging to the body.

I say this having been obese. Without education etc people underestimate the negative impact it has on society.

And also you are right. There aren't "people" waiting on the corner. There are multi-billion dollar corporation paying millions of dollars to get kids to have sugary products that will hook them for life on that addiction.

First, I never said causation. But the correlation is there, and there is a lot of violence DIRECTLY related to drugs. That is not debatable. And yes, heart disease kills off a lot of people in our society, but it kills the people who use it, the people who use it are not as damaging to others around them as junkies are likely to be. People don't get nervous that an overweight person is going to mug them, but walk down a street in a neighborhood that has been overrun with drugs and people get nervous because of that correlation.
