Default Jay Cutler awarded 2 year/30M extention...5th highest paid QB

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/18361...102009.article
Quote:
The Jay Cutler era was lengthened by at least two more seasons Tuesday when the Bears reached a contract extension with the quarterback that will keep him in Chicago through 2013.

The deal ranks Cutler fifth among the NFL's highest-paid quarterbacks behind Eli Manning of the New York Giants, Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Phillip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers.

Cutler, acquired in April after forcing an offseason trade from Denver, will get $20 million of the nearly $30 million extension guaranteed in the form of bonus money.

It’s a win-win deal for both sides. Cutler, 26, is still under contract through 2011 on the six-year, $47.86 million rookie deal he signed with the Broncos. Now he gets an early payday, with the prospect of being back on the open market as a 30 year-old with a chance for another huge deal. If things work out as the team hopes, it can give Cutler another big extension at that point.

he's pretty good, young, and the bears haven't had a decent QB for a long time. this is only natural. he's not making eli money (which he shouldn't)...

i think this contract is appropriate and i don't rate him that high.

But guys, his arm is soooo strong! Didn't you know that?!? I mean, he hasn't had a winning season since high school, but who cares about that because he can throw really, really hard. Right? Right? Guys?

Man, at the time, I was very opposed to the Skins trading the convoy of picks and whatever else to get Jay. I was confident that Campbell would do a good enough job for us to win.

Cutler is not really a QB that I would trust all the way. He presses the issue a little too much. However, the guy can throw some GODLY passes and has pretty good wheels too. He's def a playmaking QB that Washington has needed for years.

Sigh. Hindsight is 20-15 and we prolly woulda still be wretched becuz we need more than good Qb atm. Guess it's good we reserved those future draft picks. I still at some of the tosses he can stick his receivers with and would have loved to see that in burgundy and gold.

A lot of people underrate Cutler (Randy comes to mind) and I've seen a fair amount of overrate him. He's somewhere in between He's still figuring things out and he is a top 10ish QB that is young, durable, and still has upside. With good coaching he can be a good QB.

You guys are a bunch of dweebs.

The guy is a young franchise quarterback who you can build around.

Do people forget Peyton Manning was throwing 20 picks a year when he was younger? Cutler can improve his decision making process.

Cutler is a really good quarterback with a chance to become an elite one.

You never want your franchise guy to be on the market. When you have a chance to extend him at a fair price you do it.
