About 30 percent of Hood's shots came in the floater zone between 3 and 16 feet from the rim, a share that ranked in the 90th percentile among wing players, according to research from Ben Falk of Cleaning the Glass. Trade a few of those for drives and 3s, and Utah will have something.

He's best in the mid range

Quote:
Hood could average 20 per game this season, but will they be the kind of points that lead to winning?

not if he's starting

Quote:
When the Jazz traded a draft pick for George Hill two summers ago, this was considered a ďbig moveĒ for Utah, even though it pales in comparison to what the Thunder have just pulled off.

Hill was a better move than Carmelo

Quote:
That was how they largely found success with John Stockton and Karl Malone, making a savvy trade or two where necessary to shore up the team. Although they never won the ultimate prize, that tactic largely paid off.

They wasted the careers of two of the greats. How did it pay off exactly?

Quote:
The Jazz handed the keys to the team over to both Deron Williams, then later Gordon Hayward, only to have both of them spurn them in free agency.

Deron was traded

Quote:
Nevertheless, after each of those occasions, rather than undergo a knee-jerk reaction like the Thunder have and seek to instantly patch up a gaping hole as quickly as possible, Utah has taken the slow, methodical approach to wending their way back to relevancy.

I guess. After Boozer left they traded 3 firsts and a huge TPE for a black hole!

Quote:
Even if OKC brings in just one championship, unless Utah somehow puts together an unforeseen dynasty in the coming years, their path will likely be viewed as the clear winner.

You've got the Jazz with 6 all-stars now. How are they not a dynasty?

Quote:
the Jazz are largely sitting tight this year and next year could be their summer of bold moves.

I'd expect the moves to start this year

Quote:
I hope that they avoid two things Ė first, completely forgoing the steady path of developing internal talent and second, making big signings that will only last for the short term.

No reason you can't still have young guys. OKC does. All signings are short term at 4 or 5 years at most

Quote:
Depending on how large a role Donovan Mitchell is given, he could also put up a real case for Rookie of the Year honors, and is sure to take home the monthly award from time to time.

Quote:
with the departure of Gordon Hayward, he is likely to have an increase in playing time as well. With that being the case, Johnson could average between 12-14 points a night off the bench.

I doubt it. He's old. Burks is the 6h man. Should be Hood and Burks

Quote:
Honorable Mention: Donovan Mitchell. If he is given the chance to be a primary option off the bench, he is capable of scoring 12 points a night.

If he can do that he will be the primary option. You have no idea what he can do though

Quote:
This is the year where he is going to have to show the Jazz that they did not make a mistake by drafting Exum with the number 5 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

Don't think he can change that

Quote:
During the playoffs and the summer league, he passed the eye test.

He mostly sucked in the playoffs.

Quote:
This season, I want to see much more than just numbers from Dante. I want to see him confident. I want him to have a mindset that he get past any defender to get to the rim. I want to see him confidently rise and shoot when heís coming off of screens and gets open looks. I want to see him think before he leaves his feet to pass.

I want to see him hit open shots and defend without his hands. That would be a success story at this point

Quote:
He is going to be our most improved player, and will show that he is the future of this franchise at the point guard position.

What if he's the future at the 2? Mitchell is the future at the 1 ideally

Quote:
Iím going with Derrick Favors on this one, because unlike the others, heís played at a star level in the past

he has?

Quote:
he can pound the glass on both ends

when has he done that at either end?

Quote:
Honorable Mentions: Alec Burks and Rodney Hood

I'd go with Burks

Quote:
while we all have our doubts about if he can handle the increased load on offense, there is no doubt that he is the most equipped to handle it. When analyzing the Jazz roster, no other player is as capable of scoring 20 points on a nightly basis.

Rudy, Favors and Burks

Quote:
In a recent NBA TV feature on Rodney Hood, he stated that he wants to become an All-Star. His actions tell me that he really is committed to becoming just that, as he stayed in Utah all summer to work with Johnnie Bryant. Bryant is an Assistant Coach for the Utah Jazz, and the same coach who worked with Gordon Hayward and helped mold him into an All-Star.

Sounds more like he wants to get paid. Where was he the other summers?

Quote:
Rudy Gobert is going to be the front runner for Defensive Player of the Year. Just like Draymond Green this last season, voter fatigue always sets in for NBA award voters, and the player who comes in second the last few years tends to break through.

not when your team sucks

Quote:
Honorable Mentions: Derrick Favors and Rodney Hood. If either one of these players are the MVP of this team, then things either went really badly, or amazing well. If Gobert plays at the level he played last season, and one of these two is more valuable than him, then the Jazz could be a 50-win team.

35 would be a good season for this roster

ďWe feel like we can build defensively around Rudy Gobert. We look at him, and heís a top 10 player and unique defender. So we wanted to build a team around his talents.Ē

Than why not put playmakers around him? They were at their best when they had 4 around him.

Quote:
Jazz picked up Ekpe Udoh from the EuroLeague. He was named the Final Four MVP last season along with earning EuroLeague First Team honors after posting 12.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.

Averaging 1.2 blocks per game throughout his 270 game NBA career spanning across five seasons and three teams, Udoh has proven defensive abilities. He will hold down the paint and provide a steady influence on the Jazzí second unit.

5th big

Quote:
Rubioís ability in the pick-and-roll and willingness to pass to his rolling big man suggest Gobert should see a bump in his 14 points per game.

Was putting up 17 at the end of last year with shooters around him. He might get less than 14 this year

Quote:
Four Jazz players shot over 39 percent from beyond the arc in 2016-17: Joe Johnson, Joe Ingles and the now departed George Hill and Gordon Hayward. Being left with two 40 percent 3-point shooters isnít going to cut it.

And neither may do it again with no other shooters around them

Quote:
Alec Burks and Dante Exum both connected on long range shots in the low 30s last season but need to get closer to 35-36 percent to be a genuine threat.

Burks can do it. So can Neto. Exum though?

Quote:
Donovan Mitchell shot 35 percent from deep in his last season at Louisville but while he displayed an ability to hit shots from beyond the 3-point-line throughout NBA Summer League, relying on a rookie to be your outside threat is a recipe for disaster.

ROTY!

Quote:
One canít blame the former Butler star, as he decided to reunite with Brad Stevens, his college coach, and join what is undoubtedly a better team in Boston.

Jazz would be better with him. Can't blame him for leaving because they downgraded the roster and have never been all in like Ainge will be

Quote:
Hayward was Utahís best player,

Not since at least December of 2014 if ever

Quote:
Veteran Thabo Sefolosha is not the elite defender that he once was

sounds like he is

Quote:
Udoh is still just 30 years old and should hold his own as a defense presence behind Rudy Gobert on the depth chart.

I'd say he's the 4th center and behind quite a few more bigs actually

Quote:
Rubio is one of the most gifted passers in the NBA, and heís a strong defender as well. He canít shoot a lick, but he played some of the best basketball of his career down the stretch last season. While he may struggle to initiate things in the half court, he should really help Utahís transition offense.

except he sucks in transition

Quote:
The only other notable departure from Utah this offseason was that of big man Boris Diaw. Diaw

Mack and Withey

Quote:
However, should the Utah defense falter for some reason, coach Quin Snyder could see his team experience a big slide down the conference ranks.

They will have a tougher time because the offense is so bad. If Gobert goes down they are done!

Quote:
Missing 2015-16 season with a major injury certainly stunted his development

Not to mention not playing the year before he was drafted!

Quote:
the Jazz might not see a huge dip in offensive production.

Can't shoot! They will suck

Quote:
Hood came out of college as mostly a catch-and-shoot player, something that he still excels at, but he has become a more complete offensive weapon during his three years as a pro.

Pretty much the same player actually. Great scorer with the ball in his hands especially in the mid range. Not much else

The team will likely open the season with a starting lineup of Rubio, Hood, Joe Ingles, Favors, and Gobert.

Quote:
Thatís a well-rounded mix of defense and shooting.

1 shooter!

Quote:
A deep bench that includes Johnson, Mitchell, Exum, Udoh, Sefolosha, and Jerebko makes this a team that should exceed expectations.

No mention of Burks or Neto who are actually proven unlike Exum, Mitchell and Udoh!

Quote:
I donít think itís impossible for the Jazz to land the fifth seed once again.

If they were in the east maybe. 12 in the west

Quote:
Portland didnít get any better.

He has more shooters than he did back in Minnesota, guys like Hood, Ingles, Thabo, and the Jazzís unlikely playoff hero, Joe Johnson, all ready to knock down shots.

Thabo? Debatable rather they have more shooters

So they went from willing to pay tax back to the Jazz of old that save money on camp spots! With the G-league team I see absolutely no reason not to have a guy in camp just for the Stars.

Quote:
Joel Bolomboy, Raul Neto and Royce O'Neale are the three players without fully guaranteed contracts, meaning one of them must be released before the season begins.

You wrote one of maybe two articles all summer locally that were realistic and you don't know that O'Neale is fully guaranteed.

Also they don't have to be released. There could be a trade

Quote:
Rudy GobertĎs extension with the Jazz, which goes into effect this year, pays him an extra $1MM if heís named to the All-Star team (not as a replacement), plus an extra $750K for making an All-Defensive team and meeting certain rebounding criteria. Another unusual incentive in Gobertís deal? He makes an extra $250K if his defensive rating is below 100.

Probably won't make the all-star team

Quote:
Rubio may finally be the point guard Utah has been searching for.

They had him. He's on the Kings and Hayward is gone

Quote:
Ben Anderson @BensHoops
The pick the Jazz sent to Minnesota to acquire Ricky Rubio will now be determined by a team with Westbrook, PG13, and Melo.

Good trade.

I guess. OKC could be a mess. The Jazz certainly will be

Quote:
Dennis Lindsey is a wizard sent from the future.

and put together a team of the past
