IMO there are only two ways to view this

A. the universe was designed by some other higher power(s)
B. the universe just came to be on it's own

your view falls into "B"...it does include another universe though, so it's a bit more interesting :)

The older and older I get, the more I believe it all just goes black after you die. So if you're a dick for 60 years, you get to spend eternity burning in flames in a fire that never goes out? Punishment doesn't really fit the crime here. And if you're good, you get to spend eternity praising God all day and singing campfire songs? How insecure is God that we all have to go up there and talk about how great he is all the time? And wouldn't that get a little boring after a few years?

yeah it makes no sense at all really

I was born Christian...didn't take me very long to reject it, like somewhere in Jr. High

after that I was a very proud atheist...like most of the atheists on ISH...I wanted to let all the religious world know that I had more logic than they do, and show them the faults in their beliefs, that last till around age 28ish...quite a while

once I realized that atheism is just as ignorant as any religion I became an agnostic...that lasted till about age 32ish

then I was taken in by NDE stories and am now a Theist

I think I'm done evolving my beliefs...it's done, I've reached the finish line

nothing happens. humans base there existence on time. theres no such thing as time in the after life. when you die, theres no existence left.

do you remember what it was like before you were born? thats what its like after you die.

Theism is belief in a God.

So nope, most scientists still aren't theists according to your own data. Only 33%. And I'm assuming your data concerns the USA, the by far most religious country in the western world, so this number is pretty telling.

(also I like to point out that the numbers in your data don't even add up correctly. Looks like a trustworthy source!)

I never said "most were theists" but a theist would be both religious or "higher power"...(I think "most" are actually)

I was pointing out that there are more theists than atheists

Not really.

A higher power can be anything: nature, karma, yin yang, whatever.

But we know it can't be the belief in God in your data, because it's listed seperately from that. Theism specifically is the belief in a personal God.

here is another study:

"higher power" most = "nothing in particular"...because I don't see the difference between that and "don't know"...and there is no spot for just a theist with no particular belief...

but the same 17% atheist was found

theism is the belief in A GOD(s)...aka "higher power"

it doesn't have to be a religious God...or a defined God

I am a theist...and I am not religious

Sorry, but your own data separates God from higher power indicating these are not the same.

And now you tell me it's the same thing.

That says something about the data you provided, or about you. Or dare I say both.

"higher power" means they believe in God, just not a religious one

this isn't hard to comprehend...at all

Nope.

Higher Power is intentionally vague, and it's the option the people who don't feel they believe in God chose.

If they believed in God they would have checked that box, not the other one.

that refers to a religious God, then they break down the religious %

here is the text with it:
Quote:
In regards to the question being asked, however, a Pew Survey in mid-2009 found that 33% of all scientists in America (not just those elected to NAS) believe in God, compared to 83% the American public. 18% believed in some sort of "higher power" (unaffiliated with any religion) and 41% are atheist. This suggests that the "average" scientist is more likely to believe in God than the most esteemed scientists.

I will say that looking at the religious break down, the numbers do seem off...true

came from here:

http://christianity.stackexchange.co...ans-or-otherwi

regardless, believing in a higher power would still fall under theist
