Knicks can see gem in Garnett

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Friday, April 6th 2007

There are 29 teams waiting for Kevin Garnett to force his way out of Minnesota. The Lakers want to pair him with Kobe Bryant. Chicago is convinced that Garnett would put them over the top and the Knicks, seeking instant credibility, want a face for their franchise.

And while the league dreams, Garnett continues to demonstrate why he is the rarest of superstars. Rather than complain and demand a one-way ticket out, Garnett places a premium on loyalty and says he wants to help the Timberwolves rebuild.

"I've always had great respect for Kevin," Isiah Thomas said yesterday. "He's a throwback kind of guy because he has really taken responsibility for wanting to do it for the team he plays for. He's not looking to hitch a ride to a championship.

"He wants to do it on his own. There have been a lot of great players who have tried to hitch rides to get one and haven't been successful at it. You've got to admire his loyalty to his teammates and his organization. He always leaves it up to the organization to make a decision as opposed to him making a decision."

Garnett makes his one and only New York appearance of the season tonight with a team that is bound for the lottery again. The Knicks, who have lost five straight home games to team with losing records, remain in the hunt for a playoff berth despite their 31-43 record.

For Thomas, the real season begins this summer when the Knicks' president/coach looks to make the move that will get his team into the playoffs. The word around the team is that Thomas will return for the foreseeable future and Garden chairman James Dolan is giving him the green light to make major changes.

The theory last year was Dolan wanted Thomas to prove to him that he could win more than 23 games with the essentially the same roster Larry Brown had.

Garnett is on the Knicks' radar but it is unlikely that he will be traded. Thomas would also have interest in Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal, who has talked openly about being traded. Seattle's Ray Allen is another possibility, along with free agents Gerald Wallace, Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter.

Thomas probably would be open to trading everyone with the exception of Eddy Curry. Stephon Marbury's value may never be higher but his contract still scares most potential suitors.

IFFY: David Lee, who dressed for Wednesday's loss to the Sixers but did not play, is being listed as day-to-day with a sore leg. Steve Francis (sprained ankle) isn't expected to play tonight and says he likely won't travel to Milwaukee for tomorrow's game.

I agree that that is the typical New York Knicks fluff piece. Of course the Knicks want KG so does about every other team in the league.

1. We don't have enough to offer for him. Even Kevin McHale has to realize that.

2. Other teams have more to offer than the Knicks

3. Thomas has not given us any reason to believe that he can make a good deal. Even though the Eddy Curry trade worked out for us, Thomas still way overpaid for him at the time.

If We got KG Without Giving Up Lee/Curry/Jamal/Marbury/Balkman we'll be the team to beat in the east.

Keeping Collins I find that Crawford would be expendable.

And after getting KG without giving up any of those guys maybe we could get Lebron in exchange for Kelvin Cato.
