there are known purposes, yes. in termites for example, an@l trophallaxis is used to transfer essential bacteria from old to young. without that bacteria, the individual would not be able to digest the cellulose they need to survive.
in science, probiotic balance is increasingly seen as vital for human health. one of the more well-known and current methods of building healthy gut flora is the ingestion of "poop pills." such pills consist of dried fecal matter from donor subjects with healthy biotic balance.
so yeah, humans eating human excrement for purposes of good health. we probably knew about this long ago and then forgot about in the "progress" of civilisation.
But we can't judge things based on if it exists in the animal world. Some animals do some ****ed up things.
we can't judge the animal world from our POV, regardless. that's because the only thing that matters in nature is whether something works or not.
homosexuality clearly works in nature and has been found to have beneficial purpose.
however, if you look through recent human history, i think you will find that institutions such as the roman catholic church specifically designed the bible for purposes of control. controlling aspects of peoples lives, such as who can mate and who can't, was clearly a huge part of that. they had strong motives to promote a surge in population around that time, and things like homosexuality obviously went against that.
