Baker is prone to putting his foot in his mouth, but this was particularly out of context. First of all, the comment was made on the day of the draft in passing and the reporter didn't choose to run it until right before the season started, as if he were being critical of Jones out of the blue. He was expressing an opinion that most football people were repeating at the time.
Should he have commented on it with a reporter around? Probably not. But the fact that people are still running with it is kind of disingenuous. Wasn't a big deal when he said it and it is a non-issue all these months later.
He apologized anyway and then said this...
“This is not what I said….just so we’re clear,” Mayfield wrote. “I also said I was surprised I got drafted number one. Then was talking about the flaws in evaluating QB’s. Where I brought up winning being important. Reporters and media will do anything to come up with a click bait story. Heard nothing but good things and wish nothing but the best for Daniel.”
Come on, man. What more can he say to make this go away?
