    Default PS4 Hard Drive Upgrade

Anyone done a PS4 Hard Drive Upgrade?

I just got a second system and plan on installing a 2TB drive with a kit from a company called OWC.

Has anyone done one and run into anything.

    Don't buy a kit.
All they are doing is sending you a $90 hdd and charging you an extra $50 for a regular phillips head screwdriver and a USB drive (which you already have, or can buy for < $10).

This will do if you don't mind prying open the hdd case:

This will do if you don't want to do that (in fact, it must be the drive the guy you linked to is re-selling):

If you want to shop around for cheaper, any 2.5 inch hdd with a SATA 2 or 3 connection will work.

    Here are a few guides:

    It's super easy and convenient.

    Thanks,

I paid 120 bucks. That got me the two Ter Hybrid drive, but I also got a 10 Gig flash drive that with a micro SD connection on it as well, and a bus powered case ...

    and the screwdriver.

I'm installing it on a new system, so I'm curious how the the safe mode boot up will go if I don't start it fresh first. Maybe I should?

I would power it up first and see if everything is working as it should, just so there won't be any additional hassle if there is some kind of defect. But as long as your PS4 isn't broken, anything you do before you replace the drive is moot, it's only relevant if there are game saves and screenshots you want to keep.

Do you happen to know if game saves will pull down from the my plus account once I log on?

I have my original playstation still, so I can always go pull all the save files afterward if I need to.

You will automatically be using the cloud. You can also choose manually which saves to download to your system in Settings>Application Saved Data Management.

Also if you want to play online with both PS4s at the same time, the person who's not using the PS-Plus account needs to play on the system where the PS-Plus is set to primary. Then the user with the PS-Plus account can sign in an play online on the non-primary system. Just a tip, no idea if that's your plan or not.

    Worked no problem!

The only part that took a little looking was finding and installing the software, which really wasn't a big deal. And then transferring all the save data. I didn't know they wouldn't let you transfer game data if the game wasn't installed first, so it took half an hour or so to drop all the discs in and get them to load. The disc install seemed much much faster than before, but they all get prompted to pull down update files, so the thing sat in rest mode all night. The game data could be pulled down without the updates though, so everything is moved.

    Thanks for the links LJJ.

Question. Can't you just add an external hard drive to the PS4 as an additional space boost instead of completely removing the former & having less? I've seen people do this, sure you may have to re-format the external to NTFS.

Sadly no, for whatever reason Sony doesn't allow you to just use a USB connected drive (for something other than backups). It's retarded. But they did make it very easy to put in a larger hdd.

The Xbone and the Wii-U do this, just plug in a USB hdd and you are done.

Yeah, when I started looking into it that was one of the first things I found, was that the PS4 doesn't support game play from an external drive.

There are kits out there that run a SATA line from the internal connection to a housing that will let you add 3.5" drives, where you can get up to 6TB worth of space. But I also read repeatedly that once you get past 2TB some weird shit starts happening, like automatic updating and rest mode get shut off.

I reloaded all my games and game data, and I'm already over 500GB of data. And I'm by no means some big collector.
