The early 00's team is pretty sick, no?

    Duncan, Bias, Lewis & Pierce.

Yeah, that's true. In their primes with Bird, Parish and McHale playing veteran role players. That's a really good team.

This one's a bit of a curveball, but its an interesting tidbit in Celtics lore:

Around 1988/89, after the winning of the 80's was clearly over, the Celts could have traded Larry Bird to Indiana for Chuck Person and th #2 pick in the draft, which turned out to be Ric Smits. Indiana wanted to do the deal to bring home their hometown hero.

At around the same time, the C's could have traded Kevin McHale to Dallas for Detlef Schrempf and Sam Perkins.

Both deals were vetoed - by Bird and McHale, because they wanted to retire as Celtics for the sake of their legacy. "Celtics Pride" was taken very seriously back then, before the downfall that followed.

Incidentally, Smits, Person, Schrempf, and Perkins eventually all played together for the strong Pacers teams of the 90's.

A team of Smits, Person, Schrempf, Perkins, Reggie Lewis, Robert Parish, Dee Brown, Rick Fox, Sherman Douglas, and (eventually) Dino Radja would have been a contender throughout the 90's...

That's a lot of forwards. It'd take a brave man to trade Bird and McHale. The Celtics might not have drafted Smits with the second pick either. Maybe they take Mitch Richmond :)

    CT: Parish/ Radja
    PF: Perkins/ Schrempf
    SF: Lewis/ Person
    SG: Richmond/ Fox
    PG: Douglas/ Brown

Stacked! Only two real all-stars in Lewis and Richmond, but these guys would be making deep playoff runs every year. Richmond and Lewis would be able to trip up Jordan on more than one occasion I'm sure.

Hah, now that is a story!

Nice thread, a gem among, well crap.
I'll take the mid 90's. Gotta have a Bird, gotta have. Mid 90s (or 93-94 season) is when I "became" a Celtics fan so its special I guess. I really liked Sherman, he and Dino where my favourite players, however the only NBA jersey I got was Webbers golden state =(

Altho the now team is a real nightmare. Some size and a littlebit of talent inside.

Okay, I'm including Randolph but not Parker. I just can't stand that guy.

Man, my mind is wandering with the thought of all these 'what ifs'. Oh, what could have been.

Imagine the Bulls. Maybe I'll make a Bulls-related thread on this.

The only ones I really entertain are more years of healthy Larry and not losing Len Bias and Reggie Miller to dying. Those were devastating. Those other ones...less so, but I appreciate the effort.

I only really recall the last years of prime Larry when we lost to LA in 87 and Detroit in 88. I only vaguely remember the 86 title...I was only 6 at the time.
