He's trying to rip you off. If it's gasket as in cylinder head gasket(considering the white smoke it should be) that takes about 3 hours. If the head needs to be polished it gets worse, but nothing that takes 12 hours.

Rates here are 300 for replacing the gasket, 600 with polishing. For comparison a big mac costs 3,40. So unless you pay 12$ for a big mac over there 2000$ are insane.

It may not even be cylinder head gasket. It could be bad valve stem seals which also cause white smoke.

Like I said, he needs to find a local guy that works out of his home garage to fix it on the cheap or do it himself.

You can do it yourself. YouTube and your cars manual is your best friend. Invite some friends over, prop the car up and get some beers. Go in the local car community to try strangers. Good way to network.

You can also take the money, sell your car as is, take the extra money you can afford having saved up and buy another beater civic or Toyota for $4k.

went to another mechanic and told him nothing about the other mechanic.

He said the same thing blown head gasket that is minimum $2000 to fix. The problem is that when they take the heads out it will damage the threads and they have to send it to another shop to run it through a machine.

this sucks car is worth around 4,000 but no one is going to want to buy it with a blown head gasket.

It sure as hell isn't worth 4k anymore. Time to say good bye.

Go to as many mechanics as you have to.

Two is not enough.

Keep looking.

Gonna buy a new car this weekend.

So should I go with the Honda Civic or the Honda Civic Hatchback.

I love the way the hatchback looks.

Always go for the hatchback. More versatility.

Some guy at work said its only got a 1.5 engine and that he doesnt buy anything under 2.0. So what the hell does that mean?

It means that his slow POS 2.0 is slightly faster than a 1.5

lol who still judges a car by the engine capacity?
Hatchbacks are the best solution for a mixed city and road driving, they are lighter so they consume less gas and for the same reason get more out of the engine. Hatchbacks are also much more fun to drive.
