Man I still remember when he was finally coming into his own. Had developed a solid mid range game and was quickly becoming the premier big in the league and then that darned elbow injury happened. Was very happy to see him get a ring with GSW and to see how valued he was with his passing ability on top of his size albeit never getting back to his pre-elbow injury form.
Bogut was the first Aussie who had genuine star potential in the NBA. Dominated in college, #1 draft pick, came in the the NBA with big expectations. Unfortunately injuries prevented him from reaching his potential. Made one All-NBA and one All-D team, but I think it's fair to say that he'd have been a multiple all star, All-NBA, and All-D selection had he remained healthy.
He was a pioneer for Aussie basketball. Apart from Longley, we'd never had anyone play more than a handful of NBA games and mostly junk time minutes. But now we have a whole bunch of guys, like Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, Aron Baynes and Delly, who are (or have been) crucial members of playoff teams. There's also Dante Exum and Thon Maker who have decent ceilings ahead of them. And of course Ben Simmons who is going to be a superstar. I think that the 2020 Olympics will see Australia winning a medal in men's basketball. Hopefully Bogut is still playing so he can put himself forward for selection.
