Citizen Kane is simply unbeatable technically and aesthetically. However, Touch of Evil is my favorite Orson Welles film.

The extremely difficult/complex/mind boggling/famous opening shot from Touch of Evil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nn1VO1HIPk
I've always preferred The Magnificent Ambersons.

Citizen Kane is a story that has something in common with every
person who has an American Dream.... We all want Rosebud back when
we get old... Money can't buy that.

That Dream went horribly wrong at the end of the movie.

You can make the most beautiful nest in the world (a pleasure dome)...
But why?

I'm very curious as to what your favorite part of that movie was?

I have about three parts... But I want to hear your opinion first.

I'll give you 3 as well.

1. Selling Charles to Mr Thatcher. The deep focus framing with Charles playing in the background, the slamming of the window, etc., etc. By far my favorite scence.

2. When Charles orders Susan that she must continue singing and steps over her, completely casting her in shadow.

3. Charles and his newspaper buying and employing the entire staff of their main competitor. Some light humor in an otherwise dark and depressing film.

It's hard to differentiate between my favorite scenes just from a fan's standpoint and my favorite scene technically/aesthetically. They're often the same but sometimes you just have to ignore the style and focus on the story.

How well made it is and Matt Dillon's performance completely overcome any "cheapness" there might me. In my estimation, anyway.

I've only seen On The Waterfront twice, I liked it but didn't really fall in love with it like I expected to. Maybe I need to give it another viewing.

Because this is my first time to see the movie...

I'm very lost on who Mr. Thatcher was?

Why did's Kane's parents do what they did?

If you can help me out.... The movie is on Youtube....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwchje5EO4o
And right when you start this part 3/12.... It's my favorite part too. Same as yours. I guess I'm not uderstanding who Thatcher really is.

That was a great movie. As you said, Matt Dillon was just incredible. It really made me think, and I have to say it gets you involved emotionally. No homo. Lol.
