I am personally a huge fan of Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, Chip N' Dale back in the day, and im sure I could just keep going on.
Todays cartoons just don't quite do it for me.
Oh, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Great cals forgot about those especially Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck.
Today's cartoons suck because they are geared solely for kids. Cartoons in the 80s and 90s had more than 1 layer of humor and messages so that they could be enjoyed by children and their parents. I watched through X-men from the 90s recently and it was actually a really good show. Had some really deep messages I didn't really grasp when I watched it years ago. For contrast I tried watching the newer X-men Evolution show and it was horrible. Just a bunch of kid's dialogue and humor.
I love tmnt and reboot. Also a Japanese anime called Slam Dunk was aired on Telemundo when I was a kid which I absolutely loved. ThEn there is swat Kats, spider-man and samurai X (unrated thanks telemundo). Oh how could I forget the animaniacs and pinky and the brain cartoon. I loved batman the animated series too. Too bad WB bought it because after it went to sh1t!
Uhh... but none of the shows I grew up with are as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender and there are shows on par with my Cartoon Cartoons (Nicktoons Silver Age comes to mind).
Imo all of those listed are head and shoulders above the 80's cartoons if you take your nostalgia glasses off.
Now about today's cartoons: someone said that they are made specifically for kids. Actually I find that what has happened is the exact opposite. It seems that now they are made for adults first, and then the reaction of the kids is considered. I point to the LSD land that is CN these days. There is no way that Regular Show (awesome show), Adventure Time (Also good), Chowder (I can't get through an entire episode), etc. is made for kids first. Absolutely no way.
But we all want our era to be the best when in reality there is no such thing as a best. Tom and Jerry to me is still the golden example of animation, but I would argue that Avatar: The Last Airbender transcends being just a great cartoon and into great entertainment period.
But I will say that I grew up in objectively THE best animated movie era, not on quantity, but on top end quality.
Avatar: The Last Airbender transcends being just a great cartoon and into great entertainment period.
I didn't hop on the Avatar bandwagon til after the show was already over. I caught a marathon on one day and I was completely hooked. Went and bought the whole series that weekend.
It's honestly the best cartoon to come out in the past 10 years, by far. And like you said it's on par with regular TV shows, f*ck comparing it to cartoons. It's like how Lion King was to non-animated movies.
One interesting fact. Avatar is the only animated show in history to win a Peabody award for its character development
