Default Randy Ayers name Assistant Coach

The Washington Wizards announced today the hiring of Randy Ayers as an assistant coach on Head Coach Eddie Jordan’s staff. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to have Randy join our coaching staff,” Jordan said. “As an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, he implemented the defensive schemes for a team that advanced to the NBA Finals, and he has been on staffs that have made numerous postseason appearances. He will fit in nicely with our coaching staff.”

Ayers spent the last two NBA seasons as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic, where he helped Orlando reach the NBA Playoffs last season with the league’s seventh ranked defensive unit. Having joined the Magic as an assistant coach on June 10, 2005, Ayers saw the Magic cut the opposition’s scoring from 101.8 points per game in the season prior to his hire, to 96.0 ppg in his first season in Orlando and 94.0 ppg last year.

Prior to his hire in Orlando, Ayers spent six-plus seasons as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers’ coaching staff, including a stint as Head Coach of the Sixers in 2003-04 (21-31, .404). As the top assistant under Head Coach Larry Brown, Ayers helped guide the 76ers to five consecutive playoff appearances, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 2001.

Ayers coaching career also includes an eight-season stint as head coach at The Ohio State University, where he led the Buckeyes to four post-season appearances, back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 1991 and 1992, and an overall record of 124-108 (.534). In 1991, he was named National Coach of the Year by both The Associated Press and Black Coaches Association. He also spent six years as an assistant coach at Ohio State, including three years under current Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams, in addition to serving two years as an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, and two years as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Ayers has also been involved with USA Basketball, and has participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program.

Not a bad move, he has some experience with his time on the Sixers staff a few seasons ago.
