Food for thought: Today somone I ball with at the YMCA, who plays semi-professionally, told me that I have more range on my jumper than he does

Literally.

I'm no star player, but I've never met anybody with more range on their jumpshot than me. With above average accuracy, I can shoot from walls, out of bounds areas, half court, NBA 3-point range... you name it.

Just the other night I made 3-5 from half court.

If you're wondering if I'm a big guy, I'm not. I'm scrawny, a generous 5'10" and honestly, I'm pretty weak (I couldn't bench press 100 lbs, that's for sure).

My secret?!?

Elevation.

When I jump to release my shot, I give myself a little surge of elevation (simply with a slight, outward bend in my knees).

I used to study Ray Allen's jumper as child (I'm an old school Bucks fan who's seen He Got Game atleast a 100 times) and the one thing I was able to mimic exactly is the extra kick he gives himself while in the air.

Also, this has nothing to do with your vertical leap. I actually have such a crappy vertical that I can barely touch the net.

The one part of my body with muscular definition is my calf muscles, and with the right motion in my legs I can even make 3-pointers without jumping.

So, my ISH community; I am passing my one basketball secret on to you.

Want infinite range? Work on the elevation in your jumpshot.

5'10 and not being able to bench 100 is scrawny. You should be able to put up your own weight at least.

You can shoot from anywhere, but more importantly can you get the shot off against real defense? I play with kids that are my height, 6'1, 6'2 and they can shoot, but if you play D on their scrawny arses they can't do anything but chuck up bad shots

Yes. My elevation allows me to get my shot off over bigger defenders. I rarely get blocked.

If I'm on, I'm on. Doesn't matter who's on me.

I'll guard you. You're shooting % will drop from from 100 to about 25

You might get more layups though. I can't judge but because you are a little shorter and 25lbs lighter, I will assume you would be quicker than me.

its more in the knees for me. I actually have average elevation and I am dead accurate from 2 ft past halfcourt. You can ask other posters like Lamar Doom and UCLAlegend32 who have played with me. Im finally healed from my knee injuries and my range is back. I am 5'10 160

I think you're right, actually.

I can feel it in my ankles/legs but I definitely work on my knee movement too. It adds a ton of range. Half court and beyond like you said.

" Most people don't even shoot jump shots anymore- people just shoot with their arms. The key to a jump shot is legs. You have to train your legs to give you that constant energy, whether it's first quarter or fourth quarter. If you get enough lift on your jump shot, you can still make it without following through."

-Ray Allen in the new Slam magazine
