neither you nor i woulda been allowed in the major leagues during the ruth and cobb eras, chewy. everything from that time should be taken with a grain of salt.

ruth/cobb never saw that dominican pedro type heat.

Look at my paisano striking out that no good Puerto Rican, Bernie Williams. Dominican dominance!!

But I beg to differ. Baseball is a contact sport and pitchers back in the day threw pretty close to the speed that pitchers throw today. There's a few articles out there that corroborate that.

Cobb just knew how to put the bat on the ball and hit 'em where they ain't.

In my lifetime, the only two dominant pitchers I've seen pitch that could have dominated in any era are Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux.

a huge chunk of the best baseball talent wasn't allowed to play in the major leagues until the late 40s. the negro leagues actually had a winning record against the mlb in exhibition games (60-65% depending on the sauce) and the great joltin joe dimaggio said satchel paige was by far the best pitcher he had ever played against. but satchel didn't see the majors until he was already in his 40s. the mlbers and the negro league players played often against cuban teams too. the matches were always competitive... but the likes of paige, gibson, a bunch of cubans were barred from the majors.

then there's the issue of the live ball era.

it's like proclaiming george mikan the goat when black nba players were a rarity and most of his career was played before the inclusion of the shot clock.

The steroid era and the current era should have asterisks and be taken with a grain of salt as well. There's something different with the baseballs they are using today..that's the reason everyone can hit homeruns today. There was a deadball era..this is the liveball era. I understand that MLB wants to attract more people and they think that hitting more home run's is the answer to that..so they have made changes to the baseballs.

I'm not sure why so much emphasis is put on homeruns to be honest.

Some of the best hitters in the game are not homerun hitters. Cobb, Rose, Gwynn, Ichiro, Boggs, Carew.

Yeah, yeah, defense probably sucked in the dead ball era, but you still had to hit the ball. That's why hitters like Gwynn are amazing to me. He may be a Top 3 hitter of all-time. His 1994 season was one for the record books. Amazing hitter.

Because being able to combine hitting home runs with a high OBP is infinitely more valuable to a team than slap hitting singles.

Guys like Pujols, Frank Thomas, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, etc are more valuable at the plate than most of the guys you listed.

And you can't take anything from the '94 season seriously.

Why not? Cause of the strike? Gwynn just a couple of singles away from a .400 average. We'll never know.

Yes.

Both Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas had an OPS over 1.200. Neither guy would ever again come within 150 points of their career highs that year.

Gwynn hit 25 points above his career high. Griffey was 50 points in OPS higher than his career average.

You can find countless other examples. When you take away 50 games in a baseball season you're gonna have all kinds of skewed numbers.

Willie Mays is the greatest of all time.

Barry Bonds is the greatest of modern times. Yup, I went there.
