Soon (a month)? Before training camp? Before the preseason (October)? Before the regular season (September)? Before the new year (January)? Before the all-star game (February)? Before the trade deadline (February)? Or will he just expire?
In each scenario, how much will he play for Utah while waiting?
It's kinda a win and lose situation they are in. They probably aren't getting great offers now, with teams knowing that the Jazz are going to trade, but if they wait closer to the deadline, they might find a different team who's willing to make a deal (and give up future draft picks) in order to get over the top (think Rasheed Wallace to Detroit).
There's really no ideal time to trade him since it's known that he's on his way out. They just have to hope he doesn't get injured, which probably makes it better to trade him before the season, especially with his history.

But I thought that maybe Sloan would prefer to have the players he wants/needs from the start of the season as Boozer might be a distraction.

Yeah, any coach would want that... But Sloan has dealt with trouble situations before (Chris Morris), and already covered himself when he said he wanted Boozer back in a Jazz uniform at the end of last season.
I'm thinking he gets traded before the regular season, but after training camp.
The front office is showing other ball clubs that we aren't going to get taken advantage of despite Boozer's attempts to create urgency through out of state radio interviews. Now that it is all quiet, we'll wait until we can get a more even trade out of the deal.
Second most likely trade time is early in the season before the all-star game. I have no idea what we will do with him if he is still on the roster and doesn't decide to fake an injury. Would we have to play him in order to showcase his abilities? Maybe we'd make a deal with him that he gets to start and beast for a month while we close a deal before the end of the year.
