Wikipedia describes it thusly: “Doom Metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker” or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom.”

Black Sabbath are the first doom metal band. So if you want to know what traditional doom is, look no further than Sabbath. There are various other kinds of doom but I’m most partial to traditional doom.

Electric Wizard I'm checking out now. So far it's pretty bad, but more tolerable. I don't know man. This shit just all sounds muddy and lazy and dumb. I don't mean to shit on your taste, I can't help how it sounds to me.

I'm very interested in their references though. Pentagram seems overtly Satanist... not borderline at all. Electric Wizard seem Saturn-obsessed, and they seem to appropriately grasp the astrological archetype of Saturn. Are you a Satanist? Are you into astrology?

Do they have anything with more groove? I'm thinking of the most well-known Sabbath songs... Paranoid, War Pigs, Iron Man... very rhythmic stuff. Not muddy. All this shit sounds muddy as **** and rhythmically sloppy.

I still dislike the vast majority of it. Mostly the incessant nature of the rhythms is what turns me off. Screaming doesn't help either. System and Pantera are both very groove-oriented and don't scream. Add Rage to that category if you consider them metal. And Tool likewise.
