thoughts/opinions on the Yankees' no facial hair policy
Obviously, this isn't something new, but I just wanted to raise the subject. To me, this is a stupid rule to have in the first place. There's nothing trashy about a well trimmed goatee or beard. Steinbrenner is really living in the past if he thinks that this is a good way to control people. Besides, guys like Clemens, Giambi, Posada, etc are sporting some major 5 o'clock shadows on a daily basis.
I realize that being clean shaven might be important in the corporate world and the Yankees are run like a corporation, but let's face it, They aren't a corporation, they are a BASEBALL team. Besides, over the course of a long season when the games become meaningless, it can be somewhat entertaining to follow the various facial hair patterns of players (such as David Ortiz and Kevin Millar)
I remember some years back when the Reds acquired noted slugger Greg Vaughn at the trading deadline. He basically refused to shave his goatee, saying something along the lines of he didn't want to scare his young children, because they were used to seeing their dad with a goatee. The Reds eventually overturned that rule because of Vaughn's decision not to shave.
What if the Yankees are ever put into a similar situation, where they aquire someone who refuses to follow the policy. What do you think would happen?
