Default Question about #16 Seeds

We all know that a #16 seed has yet to beat a #1 seed. The main reason is because it usually consists of a top powerhouse team going against a team from a small program/conference. Has there ever been a #16 seed from a larger conference before (Big East, SEC, Pac 10........)?

No and there never will be.

Vermont can beat Syracuse tonight. I'd give them a 30% chance tonight.

^I was giving them a slim chance too. I was surprised Vermont was seeded so low. Plus the Orangemen have a history of losing early in the tourney.

To Vermont, no less. They were also the first ever #2 seed to lose to a #15 seed. Uh oh.

Well an upset happens for a reason. People may see No.12 seeds always manage to upset No.5 seeds, this is because No.12 seeds are usually bubble teams who are capable of doing some damages in the tourney. No.16 seeds, on the other hand, are usually teams who lose more than 10 games in extremely weak and uncontested conference. No way teams like that can beat No.1 seeds.

It would be interesting to see where a sub-.500 team from a power conference would be seeded if they won a conference tourney. Illinois almost did it two years ago and would have been 17-18 had they won the BTT title game. Georgia that same year won the SEC title and was seeded No. 13 with a 17-16 record. From that it's reasonable to assume Illinois would have likely been a 14 or 15 seed.

So while unlikely, I wouldn't say it's impossible.

You think if Vermont plays Syracuse 100 times- even without Onuaku- that they'll win 30 times?

I doubt they'd beat them three times, much less 30.

Had UCLA won the conference tourney, I think there's a pretty good chance they would have received a 16 seed.
