i think it is absolutely absurd to pay an athelete 10s of thousands of dollars to play a game for half a year when we have doctors and scientists doing meaningful work for the benefit of society.

Maybe it seems wrong just based on what they do but there are more people capable of being doctors than pro athletes so it makes sense that athletes are paid more. Then factor in revenue they bring in through TV deals, endorsements, etc.

These individuals are in the private sector in a free market society. Why do doctors gets paid so much in the USA? It's because they generate a lot of revenue for hospitals, not because they are helping society. That's why social workers aren't rolling in dough. Same with scientists getting paid a lot of money doing research and development with corporations. The scientists' priorities may be to aid society, but their employers are trying to make a profit. Sports teams generate a lot of revenue, so why shouldn't their players be compensated according to the value they bring to the organization?

Sports is not the cause of the downfall of education in America. An individual has a greater chance of winning the lottery (which would also allow them to retire) than being athletically gifted enough to be lock in the first round of the NBA draft. There is no financial incentive for an individual that is sure to be a lottery pick to put themselves at risk of losing guaranteed money.

If you still feel the overpaying of athletes is hurting America, then lead a boycott to stop attending games, watching games on TV, buying team sponsored merchandise and player-sponsored products.
