The Seattle SuperSonics announced today that Spencer Haywood, Seattle’s first pro sports superstar who averaged 24.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game in his five years with the Sonics, will have his No. 24 jersey retired. The retirement ceremony, presented by KeyBank, will be held on Monday, Feb. 26 when the Sonics host the Portland Trail Blazers.
I have mixed reactions to this. 1. It is about time!! Dang. Spencer left Seattle back in the early what.....1970s? And now we are finally getting around to honoring the man.
2. #24. To me that was always Dennis Johnson's number. With the number going up for Spencer, it kind of closes the doors on us retiring Dennis Johnson's number, unless we do something off the wall to honor DJ. But congrats to Spencer Haywood.
