Stan Van Gundy hits the Combine
As Van Gundy sat on the sideline of the Quest Multisport Complex, with college players doing drills in front of the scouts and executives who hold their fate, he was flanked by two people whose future he almost singularly holds in his hands — George David and Ken Catanella.
Behind them, in the bleachers, sat other executives and scouts and coaches John Loyer and Scott Roth. Loyer was made interim coach when Maurice Cheeks was fired, and Roth was brought in by Loyer after the All-Star break.
All are holdovers from Joe Dumars’ regime, although Catanella, who specializes in analytics, was brought in by Pistons owner Tom Gores in 2011. David is the assistant general manager, and point man of the draft.
