The Kings might be close to signing Kevin Martin to a long-term extension.

According to two league sources, the Kings have made the fourth-year shooting guard an offer of five years for approximately $55 million.

Martin, who is entering the final season of his contract, is expected to be handsomely rewarded for his breakout 2006-07 season as an agreement could be reached this week.

Martin was a rare highlight as the Kings finished 33-49 last season. He led the team in scoring (20.2 points per game) and shot 47.3 percent from the field.

Martin's agent, Jason Levien, declined to discuss the specifics of the negotiations but said he was encouraged by the progress.

"Kevin is excited about the possibility of remaining a King for a long time," Levien said. "He has a great affinity for the organization, and we're cautiously optimistic."

Last season was quite a leap for Martin, who was taken by the Kings with the 26th pick in the 2004 draft out of Western Carolina. He was left off the Kings' playoff roster in his rookie season.

His first break came midway through his second season, when former Kings guard Bonzi Wells missed nearly half the season with injuries and Martin flourished in his absence. Martin averaged 10.8 points in the 2005-06 season after averaging 2.9 points in 45 games as a rookie.

Martin was second in voting for the Most Improved Player award last season and made just over $1.8 million.

Seems fair IMO. It'd be great to get Kevin's locked up now IMO so we don't have to worry about this next offseason.

thats good, he is gonna be a great second option for a long time in this league....we just need to find a first option (franchise player)....oh where oh where can he be?.....

hopefully hawes will be really good, then Martin and Hawes can be kind of a Reggie Miller/Rik Smits type of combo...little off topic but ooh well

Just to play devil's advocate, he could pass up on this deal:
  • He rarely gets a play called for him
  • He never get enough shoots seeing as efficient as he is
  • He never gets the rock in the 4th
  • He won't ever be anything but a 3rd option behind Bibby/Artest
  • He hasn't gotten the franchise's trust because they won't trade the vets in front of him
  • Sacramento's a small market, could he get to a "superstar" level in a not so "superstar" city?
  • This team has no stability. 3 coaches in 2 years and a possible move on the horizon.

This has to get done, it's a must. I remember when he got drafted he said on his radio interview that the Kings were his favorite team. This has got to be what he wants....i hope.

As the Sacramento Bee reported this morning that he has accepted the offer, so we have him for SIX more years! Fantastic.

But he is # 1 not # 2, I believe with the new coach that his talents will shine evermore.

Yeah I think it's a start a bit small then it gets higher each year but I dunno for sure.

Anyway I like this signing. It's not too much to pay for him even though it is a little bit high but he definitely has the potential to live up to that contract with his work ethic. Definitely a player we needed to keep around here. And like Deb said Theus is going to do a better job of using him than Muss did, atleast IMO.
