2009 PBA Mock Draft

    FIRST ROUND

    1) Welcoat - Japeth Aguilar (6-9 C Western Kentucky/Ateneo). If he does not make it into the NBA, he'll the top pick here. Has size, athletic ability, and shotblocking potential.

    2) Coca Cola - Jervy Cruz (6-5 F University of Santo Tomas). Best big man to come out of the UAAP since Benjie Paras and Dennis Espino.

    3) Sta. Lucia - Edwin Asoro (6-3 F National University). Terror on the boards and on defense. Also has good body and athleticism. Can he play small forward in the pros?

    4) Air21 - Jonathan Fernandez (6-2 G National University). Shades of Renren Ritualo? He has similar game but could be a better defender.

    5) Purefoods - Rino Berame (6-7 C University of the Visayas). Surprised scouts when he schooled 2006 UAAP MVP Ken Bono during the Collegiate Champions' League. Has good post moves.

    6) Alaska - Eric John Llanto (6-5 F University of San Carlos). Another Cebuano big man who has great rebounding instincts and accurate shooting touch that extends out to the three-point area. Bruiser, has size and heft at his position. Could be a better prospect than a young John Ferriols.

[B]7) Red Bull - Kelvin Dela Pe

New PBA rules applied in pre-season games

    People's Journal
    September 8, 2007

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has adopted a new set of guidelines -- including a couple of FIBA-inspired rules – that will take effect this 2007-08 season.

Adjustments in the three-point line, hand checking, goal tending, zone measurement and penalty situation are among those approved by the league’s competition committee that will be implemented for the entire PBA pre-season games starting today.

In the event no glitch is encountered in the imposition of the new rules, the league will formally adopt it beginning the 33rd season that begins on Oct. 14.

“The new rules are expected to add more excitement, speed up play and likely increase the scoring in the league,” said PBA Officer-In-Charge Sonny Barrios.

PBA operations director Rickie Santos, a member for the competitions committee, believes the new rules will help improve the players’ defensive acumen.

From its original measure of 20-feet away from the basket, the three-point line has been shortened to 20-feet and patterned after FIBA.

The zone measurement has also been reduced from the PBA restricted area of a rectangle that measures “16' x 18'-10” or 301.44 sq.ft to Fiba’s restricted area measuring 3.6 meters (12 feet) wide at the free throw line and 6 meters wide (19 ft. and 8.25 inches) at the baseline or 298.54 sq.ft as per FIBA standards.

Defensive players meanwhile, will now be whistled for hand checking this time if such contact is deemed by game officials as a tool to impede the progress of the offensive players.

Goal interference and goal tending will also be a thing of the past. Under the new guideline, offensive or defensive player may touch the ball provided it touches the ring.

As for the penalty situation, the new rules will have the number of team fouls committed in the fourth quarter being carried over to overtime, the extra period now having been considered as an extension of the fourth quarter as far as the number of team fouls and the team fouls penalty rule are concerned.

During regulation, a team that commits two fouls under two minutes in any quarter automatically gets into penalty situation, resulting to two free throws for the offended player on the second foul regardless of the number of team fouls.

The last rule on penalty situation was actually approved as early as last year by the same competition committee, but was deferred for this season to give all teams enough time to adjust.

The pre-season games will last for more than two weeks, kicking off with the lone game between Purefoods and Barangay Ginebra today at the San Sebastian College gym in Cavite.

Arwind Santos is one of the best player in the Air 21 Express roster, he quite made a huge impact in his rookie season, averaging 14.03 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.8 BPG in 42 Regular Season games.

He ranked first among rookies in scoring during the Philippine Cup and almost led the Express to a quarterfinals appearance only to fall to the Sta. Lucia Realtors in a knockout match.

That is an amazing performance from last years outstanding rookies that came from the UAAP. He is also a member of the current PBA Mythical 2nd team, which is a sign that he can be the franchise player of Air 21 once that ball hogged Gary David is gone from their lineup

The future looks brighter when we have guys like Jervy Cruz dominating the UAAP with an average of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jervy is one of the best bigmen prospect since Dennis Espino, Danny Ildefonso and Don Allado of DLSU Green Archers in the 1990's.

Beside some of our players from the South like Gregory Slaughter and 21 yrs.old Rino Berame, they will probably make a huge mark in the national level, collegiate and in the PBL because of their height and potential.

The players today are much better in my opinion as proven by our current national team, which is the best team ever assembled since the 1998 Centennial Team, our players are progressing but the main reason that we cannot win the Gold in Asia is because the international competition is so much better compare to the 1990's where the only powerhouse team in asia beside the Philippines is China and South Korea, now you can see some Middle Eastern team dominating the competition like Lebanon, the champion Iran and Qatar.

CAVITE CITY -- James Yap scored 22 points and Kerby Raymundo added 19 as Purefoods polished off Barangay Ginebra with one great run in the stretch for a 97-87 decision at the start of the PBA preseason tournament at the SSC gym here last night.

Yap, the Most Valuable Player two years ago, touched off and capped a telling 11-1 run in the stretch that made it 85-71 for the Tender Juicy Giants.

That spelled the end for the Gin Kings, who were led by Sunday Salvacion

    KOREAN KT&G SQUAD NIPS WELCOAT

Devance proves worth, scores 35 in pre-season debut

    Monday, 10 September 2007

Welcoat may really have found in Joe Devance the right player to build its team around on.

The top draft pick had a spectacular maiden showing with the Dragons although he missed two crucial free throws at endgame, costing them the game against the visiting KT&G team of Korea Monday night at The Arena in San Juan.

The Dragons suffered a 91-94 defeat which won't reflect in their win-loss record in the 2007 PBA pre-season tourney since the Korean team is a mere guest squad set to play five games.

Reinforced by imports Marquin Chandler and Robert Cummings, the Koreans will be up next against the Alaska Aces
