I read in the WSJ, that in japan, there are 500 title sfor the nintendo DS, but only 200 of them are video games. many of them are educational tools that are even used in classrooms

That depends on what type of games you like. The DS has a ton of great games in different genres but this came make it tough narrowing the choices down. Tetris is a classic, and the DS version is extra cool because it lets you load the game onto other DS's for competitive play. Also great, and, I think, the most innovative DS game yet, is Elite Beat Agents - it's like Dance Dance Revolution for your hands! Also great and different for a handheld system is Hotel Dusk.
