Default What happened to Kwame Brown?

He was projected first overall in 2001 a beast in high school why wasnt he a good/great NBA player? he was often compared to Kevin Garnett coming out of highschool aswell.

Had all the physical tools, didn't have the heart or brain to go with it.

I would say it was mostly a mental block. With his physical abilities he should atleast have become a solid backup.

Like so many players, once he left the Lakers, he was never heard from again.

Does this question really need to be asked?

    Many factors

    1) HS Level is difficult to evaluate because of wildly varying levels of talent. He wasn't nearly as good as advertised.
    2) Overreliance on workouts. Perhaps because he hadn't played consistently against even college level talent, some evaluators including MJ put too much stock into workouts, including one where substantially outplayed Tyson Chandler. Again, he just wasn't that good.
    3) Terrible nurturing environment. MJ the GOAT effectively the GM had a lot riding on him being good quickly (MJ wanted to compete whilst he was playing), he had little patience and an acid tongue. After a brief honeymoon period MJ started humiliating Kwame in practice, which surely damaged his confidence and commitment to the game.
    4) His physical tools were overrated. This includes his tiny hands.
    5) Coming out of HS it was a potential pick based on future improvement. We've shown that he didn't have as much potential as was thought, and was in a poor situation to develop, but a high school pick (with the risks in accurately judging where they are now and in projecting how they will improve) were inherantly a high risk proposition (albeit they could be high reward, see Josh Smith 2004 17th pick).

Brown was compared to Garnett only in the fact that both came straight from high school.

Garnett was a freakish specimen. Though his skill set was still developing, he was the best athlete on the floor. You could see that he had all the requisite tools to develop a well rounded offensive game. He looked comfortable facing the hoop, even if his shot wasn't there yet.

Brown was a big kid playing against high school competition. Though he moved well for his size, there were real questions about his ability to play anywhere except right at the front of the rim. HS bigs who dominate due to their size vs their skill are a dime a dozen.

Yes. Probably as good a fit as there is for him. They're desperate for some interior defense, and Brown has actually matured into a decent defensive center.

This is probably the biggest factor. MJ and Kobe's 'in your face' mentality can make or break you, and it broke Kwame. Sad because he showed what he can do from time to time, especially that game against the Kings.

I think he could've been decent if he was led by player like LeBron, who has more of a joyful personality.
