Years ago after getting out of my first long term relationship and facing the terminal months of a family member who I was close to I discovered mountain biking and basketball (specifically, playing) are two things I've found that brought me legitimate joy generally no matter what outside influences might be bringing me down.

The common reasons why I've found are primarily these things:

*It's something physically challenging that keeps you moving/gets you tired, might even release endorphins and works towards being fit - all good things.

*It's something that requires some focus - which means you'll automatically tune out what was bringing you down.

*It's something that requires some teamwork - someone else is depending on you to accomplish something - other people are also helping you.

*There's moments of incredible fun when things are clicking (making a few baskets, or on a nice stretch of single track).

So whether or not you enjoy those two activities or not you can look for other ones that offer a similar recipe. For my own personality at least, they have helped me through low points. Never hurts to have great friends either.
