Default Raptors offense sputtering early in 2011-12

Even with Bargnani the team sits a lowly 26th of 30 teams in offensive rating (points scored per 100 possessions). Bargnani is averaging 8.2 points per game more than No. 2 scorer DeMar DeRozan and 10.1 more than third-leading scorer Jose Calderon.

Bargnani and Calderon are the only Raptors effectively creating their own scoring opportunities so far this season and even with them playing well, the team has still had all kinds of issues offensively.

Casey is hoping to see improvement.

“We’re doing a decent job defensively, but we’ve got to put some runs together,” Casey said after the loss to the Kings.

When you have a team that was as defensively inept as the Raps have been for the last almost decade and you bring in a coach like Dwayne Casey that is all about defense all your practice time is practicing the defensive side of the game.

Leaves very little time for Casey to bring any of his offensive philosphy add that to the lockout and the numerous negative factors it brought and it's to be expectd that the offense is gonna be lacking.

Agreed. Give them a few months to get the offensive sets down along with the new players that have been added along with some of the faces that are returning from injury. Then we shall see how bad they really are.

Yeah. I personally am totally fine with a sputtering offense since it's accompanied by a much improved defense. We have a positive rebounding differential for the first time in who knows how long. We're only giving up 92ppg, which is good for 7th best in the league, compared to last year when we gave up a whopping 105.4ppg. Our opponents FG% is an outstanding 0.401 which is good for 2nd best in the league. All of those things I consider to be victories for a team that defensively has been the laughing stock of the NBA for many years now, especially last year. Now I have a team that i'm actually proud to watch because they put in that effort and don't quit.

Bingo. This season is shaping up pretty wonderfully. We're establishing a defensive foundation, losing games and our key tradeable assets for a rebuild are playing their asses off (hoping Bargs gets healthy soon). Only thing that would be better would be a breakout year from DeRozan, but hey everything can't go right at once.

Yup. IMO couldn't be going any better (other than as you said Derozan's development). Playing hard, playing solid defense, getting after the ball on the glass, having our biggest trade assets (Bargnani and Calderon) having breakout years, and still losing enough games to make sure we get another solid draft pick next year. Things are shaping up quite well.

With the upcoming draft being one of the deepest in the last 9 years, this is music to my ears.
