Default Possibly moving to NYC in about a year, looking for some info

Good evening, I might be moving to NYC in about a year with my girlfriend. I've always said I'd never live in the city but I might end up going to grad school there. I'm looking at programs at CUNY Queens and Brooklyn.

Do any of you live in these areas? Any specific area you'd recommend? (Queens, Brooklyn)

What would I be looking at for rent? (1 bedroom apt. for the two of us)

Any other advice about moving to the big apple would be appreciated.
(I currently live in upstate NY)

Rent is expensive mang, be prepared to dish out $1k/month atleast.

Look into areas like Astoria(which is in Queens) that are cheaper, be used to taking the subway daily and don't expect to have a car. Shit is expensive here. Avoid renting in shitty areas at all costs.

Are you going to work here as well?

I live in VA and there are no 1 bedroom apartments for 1000 here. I'd imagine it's way more in NYC

In NYC forget about it but in some of the neighboring areas the price goes for lower.

Niko or some of the NYC posters probably know more

Rent can vary widely. Will you riding the subway? Familiarize yourself with what train you need and then start looking from there.
Here's prices from craigslist
http://newyork.craigslist.org/aap/

If you have a car, you going to need to find a neighborhood you can park it. Parking can be very, very tight.

I went to NYU for my MBA, but Queens is a fantastic school to take your graduate studies at (especially if it's for business). It's very difficult to adjust in New York. You need to have some support at first, my wife's parents helped us out a lot. I had to move there for school myself. Without them I would have struggled a lot. It's very expensive and make sure you leave for school an hour early because the traffic is terrible. I would suggest taking public transportation or the subway, don't buy a car.

The city is fantastic though, so much to do and the atmosphere is out of this world. Initially I rented a condo with my fiance at the time and it was $2,200 plus condo fees. My parents wired me money for the first few months and my wife's parents helped out get acclimated to the city. 2 years late, I absolutely love living here. I was also fortunate to win a shit load of money at the casinos. It helped.

But now, I have an internship paying me $1400 a week and my wife can now go get her schooling done. I am planning on moving back to California though maybe in 5-6 years. I miss it, but I love New York too.
